Choosing between household essentials and premium retail often defines a portfolio strategy. Is the steady reliability of Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE:CL) or the high-growth potential of Lululemon Athletica (NASDAQ:LULU) the better buy today?

Colgate-Palmolive provides necessity goods like toothpaste that consumers buy regardless of the economy. Lululemon focuses on technical athletic apparel, relying on brand loyalty. While both occupy different corners of the retail market, their current P/S ratio, which compares market value to sales over the past twelve months, highlights a valuation gap.

The case for Colgate-Palmolive

Colgate-Palmolive operates a vast global business selling oral, personal, and home care products alongside pet nutrition brands. It reaches consumers in more than 200 countries, with two-thirds of its revenue generated outside the United States. Walmart (NASDAQ:WMT) is a major customer, accounting for nearly 11% of sales in 2025. Customer concentration like this adds a layer of risk to the business.

In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, revenue reached close to $20.4 billion, representing a growth rate of approximately 1.4% compared to the prior year. The company reported net income of roughly $2.1 billion for the same period. While revenue grew, the net margin was nearly 10.5%, which was a decrease from the 14.4% net margin seen in FY 2024. This change highlights the impact of shifting costs on the bottom line.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is 158.4x, expressing the level of total debt relative to shareholder equity. The current ratio, which measures a company's ability to pay short term obligations with current assets, is approximately 0.8x. In the consumer staples stocks category, cash flow is vital. Colgate-Palmolive generated free cash flow, calculated as cash from operations minus capital expenditures, of about $3.6 billion in FY 2025.

The case for Lululemon Athletica

Llulemon Athletica focuses on technical athletic apparel, footwear, and accessories through an omni-channel model. This approach combines physical retail stores with a robust digital presence, including mobile apps and third-party marketplaces. The company serves guests globally and recently expanded its footprint by acquiring previously licensed operations in Mexico. As of February 2026, the brand managed over 850 total locations across its company-owned and licensed segments.

In its latest annual report for FY 2025, the company reported revenue of nearly $11.1 billion, which represents growth of approximately 4.9% over the previous year. Net income for the period was roughly $1.6 billion. The company maintained a strong net margin of about 14.2%, demonstrating its ability to maintain premium pricing even as it scales its global operations.

As of the February 2026 balance sheet, the company maintains a conservative debt-to-equity ratio of approximately 0.4x. Its current ratio is 2.3x, suggesting a strong ability to cover short term debts with its current assets. Free cash flow for FY 2025, which is operating cash flow minus capital expenditures, was close to $921.7 million. This provides the financial flexibility to fund international expansion and new product innovation across categories.

Risk profile comparison

Colgate-Palmolive faces intense competitive pressure from both large global peers like Kimberly-Clark (NASDAQ:KMB) as well as private label brands. The company must also navigate geopolitical volatility in regions like Ukraine and the Middle East, which can disrupt international operations. Additionally, legal risks persist regarding ongoing talc-related litigation and regulatory changes concerning product ingredients.

Lululemon Athletica operates in a highly competitive market where limited patents make its products vulnerable to lower-priced alternatives. The company relies on a concentrated group of manufacturers in Asia, creating potential supply chain risks. Management uncertainty is also a factor, with a CEO departure in early 2026 and pressure from a proxy contest led by the company founder.

Valuation comparison

Lululemon currently trades at a lower Forward P/E than Colgate-Palmolive, based on future earnings estimates.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Investors flocked to Lululemon at one time. However, companies with hot products often see their results falter as fashions change and competitive pressures intensify. That’s the case with Lululemon.

You can see that in the company’s struggling revenue. Its fiscal second-quarter revenue dropped 5% year over year after removing foreign-currency translations. This covered the period that ended on Aug. 2. Management doesn’t expect things to improve anytime soon, either. It projects third-quarter revenue to drop 10% to 11% and 5% to 7% for the year.

On the other hand, Colgate-Palmolive has been around a long time and has leading market shares in the toothpaste, toothbrush, and personal care (e.g., soap, deodorant, and shampoo) markets. These products may not grow fast, but the company has steady demand that doesn’t fluctuate with the economic cycle.

Its sales have been growing at a modest pace. Colgate’s third-quarter adjusted sales increased 3.6% versus a year ago.

With high market shares and steady demand, Colgate has paid dividends since 1895 and increased them for 63 straight years. That makes the company a Dividend King, or one that has raised dividends for at least 50 straight years.

With steady sales growth and a history of dividend increases, I’d choose Colgate-Palmolive over the struggling Lululemon Athletica.
