Ethereum’s validator exit queue has fallen to zero again this year, signaling that no existing stakers are unwilling to leave the network.

The exit queue has been empty for three days now, between July 18 and 20th, according to on-chain data from ValidatorQueue. The data indicates there is currently no rush among Ethereum stakers to withdraw from the network.

Ethereum exit queue falls to zero again

In September 2025, the exit queue backlog reached as high as 2.67 million ETH (approx. $11.7 billion), spurring massive sell-side pressure on the market. Since the peak, however, the Ethereum staking landscape has reversed, with the exit queue dropping to zero in January 2026.

At the time of writing, there are currently 884,440 validators on Ethereum, with more than 40.8 million ETH staked, which represents over 33.51% of ETH’s circulating supply.

There are an additional 2,499,792 ETH coins waiting to join the active validator list, with a long wait time of up to 43 days and 10 hours, the data shows.

Ethereum prepares to scale past 1 million validators

Ethereum staking queues exist partly because the beacon chain has to process and store every validator’s data. Consequently, the validator data climbs as the set grows, which somewhat raises scaling issues when trying to grow the networks to millions of validators.

On July 26th, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin floated a way around it.

In a post titled “The Extremely Lean Chain,” Buterin laid out a two-step redesign of the beacon chain that would cut per-validator state to roughly 6 bytes, using zero-knowledge proofs, as Cryptopolitan reported.

The team plans to replace per-epoch balance updates with one daily ZK-STARK proof. They also plan to shift the network’s state-management work to validators so full nodes stay light, leading to a so-called “Lean Ethereum.”

Buterin said the redesign will be the third major iteration of Ethereum and “may allow consensus to scale to millions of validators if needed.”
