Memory Stocks Sold Off as SanDisk Tumbles 7%; CXMT Unveils Next-Gen DRAM Architecture, But Morningstar Says Commercialization Still Faces Major Hurdles

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - On October 12 US Eastern Time, memory stocks tumbled across the board as market concerns mounted over the next-generation DRAM architecture introduced by Chinese DRAM maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and its plans to launch related server memory products by year-end, raising fears of intensifying competition in future server memory.

According to data from market research firm Counterpoint, based on global DRAM vendor revenue, ChangXin Technologies held a 7% market share in the second quarter of 2026, ranking fourth globally. If the technology is successfully commercialized, ChangXin is expected to lower its unit memory costs, thereby placing pressure on the market shares and profit margins of existing vendors.

As of press time, the Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) fell 4.61%, SanDisk (SNDK) fell 7.12%, SK Hynix (SKHY) fell 4.20%, Micron Technology (MU) fell 4.70%, Seagate Technology (STX) fell 3.18%, and Western Digital (WDC) fell 2.44%.

ChangXin Memory Technologies President Kanyu Cao stated on October 10 that the company expects to launch next-generation DDR5 RDIMM products featuring the 4F² architecture by the end of the year. The commercial significance of this advancement is primarily reflected in the memory cell area. Currently, mainstream DRAM uses the 6F² architecture, where F represents the minimum feature size in the process. Under the same F value, transitioning from 6F² to 4F² can theoretically reduce the area of a single memory cell by approximately one-third. Morningstar analyst Jing Jie Yu also noted that the new structure announced by ChangXin reduces memory cell area by about 30%.

For DRAM manufacturers, a reduced memory cell area is expected to increase memory output per wafer. If mass-production yields can remain stable and the additional process costs do not offset the gains from increased density, bit costs are expected to decline. Consequently, ChangXin may gain greater pricing flexibility or improve profit margins at the same selling price.

A key innovation introduced by ChangXin this time is the Vertical Surround Gate (VSG) transistor architecture. By enabling the gate to control electrical current more effectively, this structure aims to reduce leakage current and short-channel effects, while the vertical layout helps diminish the planar area occupied by transistors. This provides a new technological path for DRAM to continue increasing density as traditional scaling becomes increasingly difficult.

It should be noted that a gap remains between technical breakthroughs and successful mass-production commercialization. Morningstar analysts believe it could be "extremely difficult" for ChangXin to commercialize this structure, with primary challenges including consistency during volume production. Performance achieved during experimental or sample stages must be stably replicated in continuous production to translate into qualified products and actual profits.

Therefore, while launching products by the end of the year is a milestone worth watching, it cannot yet be inferred that ChangXin will achieve large-scale, low-cost supply by then. RDIMM is a widely used memory module format in servers, and its operational requirements encompass not only speed but also long-term continuous stability, reliability, and compatibility with server platforms. International memory giants have accumulated strong customer and engineering advantages in this field; to expand market share, ChangXin must clear the dual hurdles of manufacturing and customer qualification.

For existing DRAM vendors, potential pressure comes from both cost and supply sides. If ChangXin achieves stable mass production and expands supply, lower unit costs could help it win orders, while the addition of effective supply could also exert pressure on DRAM prices.

On the other hand, assessing the actual impact of ChangXin's announcement on memory stocks requires evaluating each manufacturer's product mix. The potential competition facing server DDR5 cannot be directly equated with an equivalent impact on HBM businesses. Moving forward, what will truly determine competitive pressure are ChangXin's mass-production yields, customer qualification, and actual supply scale.
