Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) earned $19.5 billion in the third quarter, or $44.75 per diluted share, and almost all of it came from the rising price of the bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) it holds. Shares were flat in early after-hours trading. The profit tells you bitcoin rebounded, not that the business improved. The measure that matters went the wrong way, because each share now holds less bitcoin than it did in January.

Key Numbers

  • Net income: $19.53 billion, up from $2.79 billion a year ago.
  • Gain on digital assets: $20.91 billion, up from $3.89 billion a year ago.
  • BTC Yield, the change in bitcoin per share: negative 3.7% year to date.
  • Total revenue: $125.4 million, down 3% from a year ago.

What It Means

Strategy marks its bitcoin to the market price every quarter, and the change runs straight through earnings. That means a record profit mostly tracks the price of the coin, while the small software business barely moves the result.

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »

Bitcoin per share is the real scorecard for this company, and it is shrinking. Strategy grew its pile of coins 26% this year, but its share count grew even faster, so each owner's slice got smaller.

Cash is also flowing out to defend the company's preferred stock. Strategy spent about $2 billion this year buying back its STRC preferred shares while they traded below face value. It has also sold some bitcoin to help pay for those buybacks and for preferred dividends, so a company built to pile up bitcoin is now selling some to prop up its own credit.

What to Watch Next

Watch whether BTC Yield turns positive next quarter. Also track how much bitcoin Strategy sells to cover dividends and STRC buybacks.

Anthropic files for a $2 trillion IPO — the $80.7 billion loss is the decoy, the $450 billion compute bill is the riskAnthropic publicly filed its S-1 on October 26, revealing $16.29 billion of first-half revenue (+1,304% year over year) and a $80.7 billion net loss — of which $72.4 billion is a non-cash convertible-note charge. The real number is the $450 billion of signed, mostly non-cancelable compute commitments. Here is what the filing says, why NVDA, ARM and MU are the tradeable read-through, and the conditions that decide whether the AI trade passes its first public valuation test.

Brent's $115 front month sits $4.6 above January — the $14 spread to WTI is the supply-risk premiumDecember Brent trades at $115.29 while January is $110.71, a $4.58 backwardation. The December Brent-WTI spread is $14.2, versus a $3-5 normal. That gap, not the headline, is where the Middle East supply risk is priced. Here is what the curve says, why the December contract's expiry on October 30 will mechanically cut the headline by $4.6, and the 108.81 neckline that decides the next move.
