On its first quarter of fiscal 2027 earnings call, held on Oct. 28, 2026, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) announced that Microsoft Cloud revenue surpassed $63 billion with 30% year-over-year growth. This expansion highlights how enterprise software adoption is shifting toward agentic systems and consumption-based billing models. Three key takeaways from management highlight the path forward for long-term investors.

1. Revenue Models Are Shifting From Fixed Seats to Consumption Billing

Management is expanding monetization beyond flat per-seat software subscriptions into usage-based billing tied directly to automated tasks. This shift expands the total addressable market, or TAM, and average revenue per user, or ARPU, as autonomous agents, under Microsoft's Copilot brand, handle higher-value business processes.

And as agents take on higher-value work, consumption opens up business-funded demand with spending tied directly to the value these agents deliver. The number of Copilot customers actively consuming credits through usage-based billing grew over 75% over the quarter.
-- Satya Nadella, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

2. Data Center Efficiency Gains Are Unlocking Extra Cloud Infrastructure Capacity

Engineering optimizations across graphics processing units, or GPUs, allowed the company to serve excess artificial intelligence demand without waiting for new physical infrastructure. Revenue for Foundry, the company's cloud platform for building artificial intelligence applications, grew rapidly as hardware throughput improved.

Foundry revenue more than tripled year-over-year with upside driven by efficiency gains across our GPU fleet that allowed us to allocate additional capacity to customers as well as higher revenue per token that we benefited from in the quarter.
-- Amy Hood, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

3. First-Party Artificial Intelligence Models Reduce Enterprise Training Costs

Microsoft Artificial Intelligence, or MAI, models match frontier performance within months while cutting compute overhead. By lowering training costs, the company passes savings directly to corporate customers running custom software workflows.

We also continue to make rapid progress with our first-party models. Our goal is to advance the cost-to-outcome frontier, which means delivering capabilities comparable to leading models within 3 to 6 months of their release at a fraction of the training cost, thereby allowing us to transfer those cost benefits to customers.
-- Satya Nadella, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Cloud computing infrastructure demand continues to outpace available hardware capacity across global data centers. To capture this workload surge, the company added new facilities this quarter while accelerating hardware deployment speeds and optimizing existing server fleets.

Accelerating demand led to us adding 24 new data centers across 5 continents this quarter. And we are bringing capacity online faster, reducing dock-to-live times by about 20% quarter-over-quarter for new GB300s in our biggest regions, which make up the majority of the GPU deployments.
-- Satya Nadella, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Looking forward, management is balancing $170 billion in annual capital expenditure with disciplined operational efficiency across every software layer. With broad enterprise adoption across cloud services and agentic workflows, execution discipline remains central to compounding shareholder value.

In closing, based on the demand we see, the strength of our products, and the efficiency we are driving across the stack, I've never been more confident in the long-term returns for our investments.
-- Satya Nadella, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
