On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Acme United (NYSEMKT:ACU) announced an 18% top-line increase to $58 million driven by expansion across its first aid and cutting tool lines. Management is actively closing unscalable manufacturing assets while directing capital toward automated domestic operations and direct-to-consumer acquisitions.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Shuttering Unscalable Plants Unlocks Annual Overhead Savings

High domestic manufacturing costs pushed management to close its legacy Diamond Machining Technology sharpening facility in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Shifting that volume to Chinese partners eliminates inefficient factory footprint and frees up capital for higher-margin operations.

We will close the plant during the fourth quarter and have reserved $1 million. Savings are expected to be over $1 million annually, beginning in January 2027.
-- Walter Johnsen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

2. Smart First Aid Kits Build High-Margin Recurring Refill Revenue

Automated inventory tracking turns standard cabinet hardware sales into predictable consumable revenue streams. Equipping safety products with radio-frequency identification technology keeps commercial customers locked into the company's refill ecosystem.

This product includes integrated RFID technology and generates automatic replenishment orders for refills. Customer feedback has been encouraging, and we plan to begin shipping in January 2027.
-- Walter Johnsen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

3. Targeted Automation Investments Accelerate Domestic Facility Output

Management directed $6 million toward purchasing its 77,000-square-foot facility in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee. That automated infrastructure expanded overall production capacity and immediately unlocked rapid volume gains for the absorbent cleaning product line.

The Spill Magic plant in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee, that we opened in March 2026, is now fully operational. It provides increased capacity that has resulted in growth of approximately 34% this year.
-- Walter Johnsen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Shipping costs and inflation are pressuring operational expenses, but factory automation and plant efficiency are shielding core profit margins.

There have been increases in shipping costs, freight expenses, and inflation, which we are offsetting with improved efficiency from automation and new equipment.
-- Walter Johnsen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

First aid products remain the primary long-term organic growth engine, representing 70% of total company sales.

If you look long-term, I think the First Aid business has greater organic growth opportunities, and I think that given that it's 70% of our business, chances are it will continue to become increasingly important in the overall company.
-- Walter Johnsen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
