On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, Tractor Supply (NASDAQ:TSCO) announced a return to positive comparable store sales growth, which measures sales at locations open for at least a year. Long-term investors should care because management is reshaping its cost structure to protect profit margins during a cautious retail environment. Three things management said stand out.

1. Reinvesting Tariff Refunds Drives Customer Traffic

Management is using government tariff refunds -- money returned on import taxes -- to lower prices on 50 essential items that rural customers buy regularly. This targeted value strategy is accelerating unit volume and driving store traffic despite broader consumer budget pressures.

A significant portion of our price investment has been on everyday essentials that matter most to our customers, and we have been focused on approximately 50 everyday Essentials SKUs that matter most to our customers.
-- Hal Lawton, Chief Executive Officer

2. Cost Reduction Targets Protect Operating Margins

To ensure the operating margin -- the percentage of revenue left after paying operational costs -- remains above 9%, the business is targeting reductions in selling, general, and administrative expenses (corporate overhead). The company is streamlining store tasks and supply chain operations to offset rising freight and labor costs.

On the SG&A side, we are targeting more than $75 million in additional annual reductions over 2027 and 2028.
-- Hal Lawton, Chief Executive Officer

3. Moderating Capital Spending Unlocks Cash Flow

After spending heavily to modernize its supply chain and build distribution centers, management is curtailing capital expenditures, which are funds spent on physical assets. Lowering capital intensity below 4% of net sales frees up cash flow for shareholder returns and disciplined expansion.

With much of that investment behind us, we expect capital expenditures to moderate significantly and move below 4% of sales in 2027 and beyond, providing greater flexibility in deploying cash generated by the business.
-- Hal Lawton, Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Customer traffic is accelerating into the final quarter as strategic initiatives take hold. The business relies on its specialized rural footprint, proprietary logistics, and loyalty program retention while tracking pricing discipline across key categories.

Our team is acting with urgency to improve comparable sales strengthen profitability, sharpen our strategic priorities, and make deliberate choices about where we invest our capital and resources.
-- Hal Lawton, Chief Executive Officer

Capital allocation is shifting toward existing store productivity and cost discipline to maximize returns.

As we look ahead, our priorities are clear. We need to drive stronger, comparable sales, manage cost with discipline, and focus our capital on the opportunities that generate the best returns.
-- Hal Lawton, Chief Executive Officer
