The restaurant industry is evolving as consumers prioritize convenience and high-quality flavors. Deciding between high-growth Dutch Bros (NYSE:BROS)and the established Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE:CMG) requires a look at their 2026 outlooks.

Dutch Bros focuses on drive-thru beverage culture with a loyal following, while Chipotle dominates fast-casual dining with its health-conscious burritos and bowls. Investors often compare them to determine whether to favor rapid unit expansion or a proven, cash-generating leader with significant market share.

The case for Dutch Bros

Dutch Bros serves hand-crafted beverages through a rapidly growing network of drive-thru shops across the United States. The company differentiates itself through a unique culture and a customizable menu of espresso-based drinks and proprietary cold beverages. It relies heavily on co-packers such as Portland Bottling Co. and Lieb Foods for its Rebel energy drinks, which account for nearly 22% of systemwide sales.

In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, the company reported revenue of nearly $1.6 billion. This represented growth of approximately 27.9% over the previous year. The company reported net income of roughly $79.8 million, resulting in a net margin of nearly 4.9%.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was nearly 1.6x, calculated by dividing total debt by shareholder equity. The current ratio, which tracks the ability to cover short-term debts with current assets, was close to 1.5x. Free cash flow, calculated as cash from operations minus capital equipment spending, was approximately $54.4 million for the year.

The case for Chipotle Mexican Grill

Chipotle Mexican Grill dominates the fast-casual dining space by focusing on responsibly sourced ingredients and a direct-to-consumer service model. It has aggressively expanded its digital presence, with third-party delivery aggregators now accounting for more than 16% of food and beverage revenue. This digital focus helps it navigate the landscape for consumer discretionary stocks while partnering with groups like the Alshaya Group for international growth.

In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, the company reported revenue of nearly $11.9 billion. This reflected a growth rate of roughly 5.4% over the previous period. The company generated net income of approximately $1.5 billion, maintaining a strong net margin of nearly 12.9%.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was nearly 1.8x. The current ratio, which indicates the ability to meet short-term obligations using current assets, was roughly 1.2x. Free cash flow for the year reached nearly $1.4 billion, representing the cash left over after accounting for operations and capital spending.

Risk profile comparison

Dutch Bros faces intense competition from established coffee shops like Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) and other quick-service restaurants. Its expansion strategy relies on opening new locations, which carries execution risks including site identification, permitting delays, and management of construction costs. Furthermore, potential tariffs on coffee imports from Central and South America threaten supply chain consistency and profitability.

Chipotle Mexican Grill maintains a high food safety risk profile due to its use of fresh ingredients, which could lead to illness outbreaks and reputational damage. The company faces stiff competition from both traditional restaurant chains and non-traditional players such as dark kitchens. Additionally, regulatory compliance poses a burden, particularly with emerging sustainability disclosures and evolving employment laws that impact staffing costs.

Valuation comparison

Chipotle Mexican Grill currently trades at a lower valuation relative to both earnings and sales, despite its larger scale and higher net margin.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

When comparing Dutch Bros and Chipotle Mexican Grill, investors should consider a few key factors. Let's have a look at them and see what that tells us about each stock.

To start, there's growth. Both companies have maintained strong growth over the last five years, but Dutch Bros has an edge in the category. Dutch Bros has averaged 35.9% quarterly year-over-year revenue growth since 2022, while Chipotle has averaged 12.3%.

Another factor to consider is each company's profitability. Here, Chipotle shows some real strength. It has averaged a 15.6% operating margin since 2022, with overall profitability remaining close to that average. Its current operating margin is 15.4%. Dutch Bros, meanwhile, has been more volatile. Its operating margin has averaged 1.8%, but it has been steadily climbing in recent quarters. The current operating margin is 9.7%. In other words, Dutch Bros has pivoted to consistent profitability, and it is closing the gap on Chipotle. However, Chipotle still has an edge in the category overall.

Last, there's valuation. We'll look at price-to-sales (P/S), since Dutch Bros has only recently become consistently profitable. By comparing P/S ratios, it becomes clear that these two stocks are priced in a very similar manner. Chipotle has a P/S ratio of 2.97x, and Dutch Bros's P/S ratio is 2.90x. What's more, their respective P/S ratios have moved in tandem for the last two years. So, as far as valuation is concerned, this category is a tie.

In summary, while both are consumer discretionary stocks, there are key differences. Dutch Bros has an edge in growth, while Chipotle maintains an edge in profitability. However, in a head-to-head matchup, some investors will likely favor Dutch Bros, not only for its faster growth, but also because it is closing the profitability gap on Chipotle.
