Net interest margin is projected to be in the range of 3.23% to 3.26% in the fourth quarter.
Private bank deposits reached $18.5 billion at the end of Q3.
Management authorized $1.3 billion in additional share repurchase capacity.
On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 16, 2026, Citizens Financial (NYSE:CFG) announced record quarterly total revenues of $2.3 billion driven by net interest margin (NIM) expansion. The bank is expanding profit margins and scaling its wealth management capabilities to raise return on average tangible common equity (ROTCE, a metric evaluating profitability relative to tangible equity). Three things management said stand out.
Management expects expanding net interest margins to push profitability toward its medium-term ROTCE target of 16% to 18% by late 2027. The forecast calls for NIM in the 3.23% to 3.26% range in Q4 of 2026, rising to between 3.30% and 3.50% in Q4 2027. Fixed-rate asset repricing and rolling off legacy interest rate swap drags give the bank clear structural tailwinds regardless of short-term interest rate moves.
This projected margin expansion combined with the increasing contributions from the private bank, our diversified capital markets businesses, and normalizing credit should drive our ROTCE into our target 16% to 18% range.
-- Aunoy Banerjee, Chief Financial Officer
The private bank unit expanded its deposit base to $18.5 billion, giving the company low-cost funding that protects overall deposit costs. Gathering operating accounts from wealthy clients provides cheap capital that offsets broader competitive pricing pressures across the banking sector.
The private bank again delivered strong deposit growth ending the quarter at $18.5 billion Importantly, the overall deposit mix and cost continues to be very attractive.
-- Aunoy Banerjee, Chief Financial Officer
The company is accelerating its Reimagine the Bank program, an enterprise cost discipline initiative that leverages new software technologies to streamline operations. Management raised its annualized pre-tax cost savings projection for late 2027, creating operating leverage without requiring major upfront expenses.
We expect to exit 2026 with about $100 million of annualized pre-tax benefit. Then more than double that to $225 million by the end of '27. A little ahead of our original plan.
-- Aunoy Banerjee, Chief Financial Officer
Record quarterly revenue and expanding profit margins give management plenty of reason to feel good about near-term momentum. A growing private bank franchise, cost efficiency initiatives, and middle-market advisory strength position the bank to generate consistent capital while management monitors interest rate volatility and commercial credit discipline.
We feel good about our outlook for Q4 and we feel we are positioned well for 2027 and the medium-term.
-- Bruce Winfield Van Saun, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Repurchasing undervalued shares remains a central element of the company's strategy to compound value for long-term shareholders. To that end, Citizens Financial's Board authorized an increase of 1.3 billion to the share repurchase program, bringing the total to $1.95 billion.
I want to be in the market buying back the stock. I think the stock is cheap. I may sound like a broken record on that, but I think the stock is below its fair value.
-- Bruce Winfield Van Saun, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
