American Airlines Group operates one of the largest airline networks in North America
A significant share sale by a major insider, like a CEO, gets investors’ attention. However, this transaction shouldn’t raise any red flags.
That’s because he conducted his share sale solely to meet his tax obligations relating to the vesting of his restricted stock units. That doesn’t reflect his confidence, or lack thereof, in American Airlines’ business prospects.
Similarly, Vice Chair Stephen Johnson also sold about 78,000 shares at the same time for that reason.
However, investors should note that the airline industry faces challenges, including higher fuel prices that could create cost pressures. Right now, carriers have been able to raise fares, but that might not last, and American Airlines and competitors could see demand falter. Naturally, that would hurt revenue and profitability.
Investors have been cautious about American Airlines’ prospects, based on the share price performance. This year, the stock lost 22.5% through Oct. 16. That compares to the S&P 500 index’s 12.9% total return.
