Anthropic Third-Quarter Revenue Rises to $16.8 Billion as It Achieves Adjusted Profitability: Can Its $2 Trillion IPO Valuation Stand the Test?

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - Anthropic is gearing up for a potentially record-breaking initial public offering with rapid growth and improving profitability.

According to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, Anthropic disclosed at an IPO investor presentation at its San Francisco headquarters that its revenue for the third quarter of 2026 reached $16.8 billion, up about 46% from $11.5 billion in the second quarter. More importantly, the Claude developer stated that it achieved adjusted profitability for the second consecutive quarter and recorded positive cash flow.

Revenue Continues to Grow, But Expansion Pace Begins to Normalize

Anthropic's first-quarter revenue was approximately $4.8 billion, rising to $11.5 billion in the second quarter and further increasing to $16.8 billion in the third quarter. Although revenue in the latest quarter still grew by nearly 50%, the company's pace of expansion has begun to slow compared to its quarter-over-quarter growth of more than 100% in the second quarter.

Based on currently disclosed data, Anthropic's cumulative revenue for the first three quarters reached approximately $33.1 billion, equivalent to more than seven times its full-year revenue of roughly $4.6 billion in 2025. This indicates that Claude's commercialization has entered a new stage of scale, with enterprise APIs, Claude Code, and model services distributed via cloud platforms driving rapid revenue expansion.

The company also stated that for every $1 spent on computing costs in the third quarter, it generated approximately $1.70 in revenue, with an adjusted gross margin reaching 85% and an adjusted operating margin exceeding 11%. These figures mean that Anthropic's revenue growth rate is currently outstripping the growth rate of certain inference and computing costs.

However, the revenue scale must still be understood in light of accounting methodologies. Anthropic includes certain transactions generated through Amazon AWS and Google Cloud on a higher gross basis in its revenue, whereas OpenAI uses a different methodology. Therefore, revenue figures from the two companies cannot be directly used to judge whose actual business scale is larger.

Adjusted Earnings Do Not Equal Full Profitability

Anthropic achieving adjusted profitability is the most closely watched detail in this disclosure, but it does not mean the company has entered a phase of sustained profitability across all accounting metrics.

Adjusted profit typically excludes items such as stock-based compensation, certain model training costs, changes in the valuation of financing instruments, or partner revenue-sharing. Anthropic has not yet published a complete income statement, leaving outside observers unable to confirm which expenses were excluded or to determine whether positive free cash flow is sustainable.

This stands in sharp contrast to the company's 2025 financial performance: Anthropic generated nearly $4.6 billion in revenue last year while posting an operating loss of over $8 billion; its net loss of approximately $42 billion also included substantial accounting charges related to changes in the valuation of financing instruments.

Therefore, whether the third-quarter profit improvement stems from gains in operational efficiency or from changes in cost recognition timing and adjustment criteria can only be determined once the public S-1 registration statement and audited financial data are released.

$2 Trillion Valuation Still Faces Public Market Test

Anthropic is expected to launch its official roadshow as early as the week of November 9 and strive to list before Thanksgiving, though the specific schedule remains subject to adjustment. Some investors previously believed that the company's reasonable valuation could range between $1.8 trillion and $2 trillion.

If its third-quarter revenue of $16.8 billion is simply annualized, Anthropic's current revenue run rate is approximately $67.2 billion. Based on a valuation of $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion, its corresponding price-to-sales ratio is around 27 to 30 times. Because annualized figures are not an official forecast of future revenue, this valuation remains grounded in the assumption that the company will maintain high-speed growth in the future.

Meanwhile, Anthropic will need to undertake over $500 billion in commitments for cloud computing, chips, and infrastructure spending over the next decade. If enterprise AI demand continues to expand, locking in computing power in advance could help the company increase its market share. However, if revenue growth slows, model prices drop, or financing costs continue to rise, these heavy fixed commitments could also become a strain on cash flow.

Investors also need to evaluate AI safety risks and their potential commercial impact. Anthropic has consistently positioned safety research as part of its identity, but as model capabilities continue to enhance, technical risks, cybersecurity, and regulatory requirements could also affect product deployment and commercialization progress. How the company manages these risks may become an important factor for long-term investors assessing its governance capabilities.

Overall, $16.8 billion in quarterly revenue and adjusted profits demonstrate that Anthropic's pace of commercialization has significantly exceeded prior expectations, while bolstering its leverage in competing against OpenAI, Google (GOOGL) and Meta (META). However, a $2 trillion valuation requires the company not only to maintain growth, but also to prove that its current profit margins can cover long-term computing investments.
