Indonesian Rupiah in focus as BI leadership race begins

  • Bank Indonesia interim head Destry Damayanti has emerged as the frontrunner among candidates submitted to parliament.
  • The US Dollar gains safe-haven support after an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon.
  • The Greenback could face headwinds as markets assess a potential Iran-Oman maritime agreement for the Strait of Hormuz.

USD/IDR inches higher after registering nearly 0.5% losses in the previous day, trading around 17,960 during the Asian hours on Thursday. Traders are keeping a close eye on the nomination process following the sudden resignation of Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Perry Warjiyo late last month.

Reuters reported that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is moving swiftly to appoint a new central bank governor. According to a source with direct knowledge of the matter, interim head Destry Damayanti has emerged as the frontrunner. A second source confirmed that Damayanti's name was included on a shortlist submitted by the president's office to parliament, though she remains one of several candidates under consideration.

Economists at DBS Group Research observe that Indonesia’s currency and rates markets have remained relatively stable in recent sessions, with the “pullback in oil prices and absence of fresh negative triggers” helping to keep “USDIDR rangebound within 17900-18000 this week.” They add that the rates complex is similarly steady, as “the benchmark long-end yield holds around 7.3%, taking cues from hardening in US rates,” underscoring how external developments are shaping onshore market pricing even as domestic conditions remain in flux.

The USD/IDR pair rebounds as the US Dollar (USD) gains support from renewed safe-haven demand following an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon. The attack, which killed one person and injured 11, marked one of Israel’s deadliest bombings since the June ceasefire began. Israel's military issued a displacement order roughly 30 minutes before the strike, stating it was targeting and destroying Hezbollah infrastructure in response to the group’s violation of the ceasefire terms.

Despite these geopolitical safe-haven gains, the Greenback could encounter headwinds as market participants weigh reports of a new maritime agreement between Iran and Oman. The two nations are finalizing a joint statement on a shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, raising expectations for an increase in Middle Eastern energy flows. Although Tehran emphasized that the temporary two-to-four-month route does not mark a full reopening of the strategic waterway, the development has somewhat eased supply disruption fears.

On the US economic front, recent data delivered a mixed picture. ADP private-sector payrolls rose by just 44,000 in July, a sharp drop from June's revised 98,000 and well below the market forecast of 70,000. Conversely, the ISM Services PMI showed steady momentum, ticking up slightly to 54.1 in July from 54.0 in June, though it narrowly missed the expected 54.5 mark. Investors are now turning their attention toward upcoming economic drivers, specifically Thursday's Initial Jobless Claims and Friday's pivotal Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report.

Cook flags inflation risks but keeps rate hike option conditional

Fed’s Cook delivers a moderately more forceful tone than usual, with the 7.2/10 FXS Speechtracker score standing above the 6.5/10 historical average, yet still framed by an emphasis that further rate hikes may prove unnecessary. The remarks balance confidence in a resilient economy and sturdy job market with a clear warning that inflation threats surpass job market concerns, highlighting growing risks that excessive inflation could become entrenched and underscoring a firm commitment to restoring price stability while keeping the option to raise rates if the disinflation trend fails to reappear. Overall, the speech leans hawkish in inflation rhetoric but stops short of signaling an imminent tightening move, maintaining conditionality around future policy action.

The FXS Fed Sentiment Index fell by 1.93 points to 140.92, indicating a modest pullback in perceived hawkishness despite remaining firmly above the neutral 100 threshold. This suggests that, while Cook’s tone is more hawkish relative to the historical average and the FXS Speechtracker score is elevated, market interpretation still places the Fed in hawkish territory but with slightly reduced expectations for near-term rate hikes.
