New Zealand Dollar gains ground to near 0.5700 on RBNZ rate hike prospects

Source Fxstreet
  • NZD/USD gains traction to near 0.5690 in Friday’s Asian session.
  • RBNZ is set to raise interest rates aggressively to contain inflation.
  • Markets price in around a 92.8% chance of Fed rate pause in the October policy meeting.

The NZD/USD pair gathers strength to around 0.5690 during the Asian trading hours on Friday. Growing expectations of a Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) rate hike provide some support to the New Zealand Dollar (NZD) against the US Dollar (USD). Traders will keep an eye on the preliminary reading of the US S&P Global Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for October later on Friday.

The Kiwi strengthens against the USD despite softer Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation data. Many analysts see inflation accelerating well above 4% in the fourth quarter and potentially staying outside the 1-3% band the RBNZ targets for longer than the central bank had previously projected.

Markets are now pricing in about an 85% odds that the RBNZ will raise the Official Cash Rate (OCR) by a quarter-point to 3.0% at the October meeting, and an almost one-in-two likelihood it will rise to 3.25% in December, according to Bloomberg.

“Higher for longer inflation is a major headache for the RBNZ,” said Mark Smith, senior economist at ASB Bank in Auckland, who sees inflation above 3% until the fourth quarter next year and tips a rate hike on October 28. “We expect the RBNZ to acknowledge that they have more work to do and to maintain a conditional tightening bias,” Mark added.

On the other hand, traders lower their bets on a US interest rate hike after Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Kevin Warsh refused to give any clear hint about how soon another interest rate increase might come.

Markets currently assign a 92.8% probability to the Fed holding interest rates steady next week, while pricing in an 80.5% chance of a rate hike in December, the CME FedWatch Tool showed.

NZD upside capped as RBNZ tightening meets ongoing Fed hawkishness

Strategists at Brown Brothers Harriman note that New Zealand’s inflation backdrop and commodity dynamics continue to support a hawkish stance from the RBNZ, with “above target inflation and still elevated oil prices” arguing for further rate increases. They point out that “the swaps curve price in 85% odds of a 25bps RBNZ rate hike to 3.00% on October 28 and more than 100bps of tightening over the next twelve months to 3.75% - near the upper end of the RBNZ’s estimated neutral range of 2.20%-4.10%.” However, BBH cautions that the implications for the currency are more limited, stressing that “nonetheless, NZD/USD upside is constrained because Fed tightening curbs the scope for policy convergence.”

Warsh flags investment surge and AI risks but avoids policy pre-commitment

Fed Chair Warsh’s speech scores 5.6/10 on the FXS Speechtracker, modestly below the 6.1/10 historical average, signaling a slightly less impactful tone relative to the established baseline despite broadly constructive remarks on structural growth and an investment surge. The admission of being “over-scarred from the global financial crisis” underscores a persistent caution bias even as Warsh notes the world has conformed to the Fed’s expectations and highlights policy-driven investment strength, while repeatedly refusing to prejudge the October and December meetings, reinforcing data dependence and limiting near-term Dollar guidance. Warsh’s focus on AI as a demand-side force with uncertain employment effects, coupled with upcoming field hearings and task forces, points to a forward-looking but still exploratory stance on technology-driven risks and opportunities for monetary policy and financial stability.

The FXS Fed Sentiment Index was unchanged, moving 0.00 points to a still-elevated level of 127.51, confirming that the overall policy tone remains firmly in hawkish territory even as the speech score undershoots the historical average on the FXS Speechtracker. The lack of index movement suggests that Warsh’s remarks, while cautious and non-committal on specific rate paths, did not materially alter market perceptions of the Fed’s hawkish bias or the underlying support for the Dollar.

Chart Analysis NZD/USD

Technical Analysis: NZD/USD retains a negative outlook below the 100-day SMA

In the daily chart, NZD/USD keeps a bearish near-term tone as it remains capped beneath the 100-day simple moving average (SMA). Price trades above the Bollinger Bands’ 20-day middle line, suggesting some short-term stabilization after the recent slide, but the upper band is already acting as nearby overhead supply. The Relative Strength Index (14) at 52.8 has recovered into neutral territory, hinting at fading oversold conditions rather than a clear bullish shift.

On the topside, initial resistance is located at the Bollinger upper band around 0.5705, followed by the 100-day SMA at 0.5770, where selling pressure is likely to re-emerge while price holds below these levels. On the downside, support is seen first at the Bollinger middle band near 0.5635, with a stronger structural floor at the lower band around 0.5565; a break beneath this latter zone would reopen the broader downtrend toward fresh lows.

New Zealand Dollar FAQs

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD), also known as the Kiwi, is a well-known traded currency among investors. Its value is broadly determined by the health of the New Zealand economy and the country’s central bank policy. Still, there are some unique particularities that also can make NZD move. The performance of the Chinese economy tends to move the Kiwi because China is New Zealand’s biggest trading partner. Bad news for the Chinese economy likely means less New Zealand exports to the country, hitting the economy and thus its currency. Another factor moving NZD is dairy prices as the dairy industry is New Zealand’s main export. High dairy prices boost export income, contributing positively to the economy and thus to the NZD.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) aims to achieve and maintain an inflation rate between 1% and 3% over the medium term, with a focus to keep it near the 2% mid-point. To this end, the bank sets an appropriate level of interest rates. When inflation is too high, the RBNZ will increase interest rates to cool the economy, but the move will also make bond yields higher, increasing investors’ appeal to invest in the country and thus boosting NZD. On the contrary, lower interest rates tend to weaken NZD. The so-called rate differential, or how rates in New Zealand are or are expected to be compared to the ones set by the US Federal Reserve, can also play a key role in moving the NZD/USD pair.

Macroeconomic data releases in New Zealand are key to assess the state of the economy and can impact the New Zealand Dollar’s (NZD) valuation. A strong economy, based on high economic growth, low unemployment and high confidence is good for NZD. High economic growth attracts foreign investment and may encourage the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to increase interest rates, if this economic strength comes together with elevated inflation. Conversely, if economic data is weak, NZD is likely to depreciate.

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) tends to strengthen during risk-on periods, or when investors perceive that broader market risks are low and are optimistic about growth. This tends to lead to a more favorable outlook for commodities and so-called ‘commodity currencies’ such as the Kiwi. Conversely, NZD tends to weaken at times of market turbulence or economic uncertainty as investors tend to sell higher-risk assets and flee to the more-stable safe havens.
