United States Dollar Index weakens to near 102.00 ahead of US CPI release

  • US Dollar Index weakens to around 102.15 in Wednesday’s Asian session.
  • Fed’s Williams still sees one more rate hike this year.
  • The US September CPI inflation data will take center stage later on Wednesday.

The US Dollar Index (DXY), an index of the value of the US Dollar (USD) measured against a basket of six world currencies, currently trades near 102.15 in the Asian trading hours on Wednesday. The DXY declines following remarks from New York Federal Reserve (Fed) President John Williams.

New York Fed President said on Tuesday that he still expects one more rate hike this year, but sees no need for further increases in 2027. “I haven’t changed my view that it may be appropriate to have one more rate hike,” said Williams. “I don’t think at this time I have any reason to believe that we would need to do more,” he added.

Markets see about a 77.3% chance that the Fed will leave rates unchanged at its October 27-28 meeting, up from 51% a month ago, while pricing in about 75 basis points (bps) of tightening by late 2027, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

Traders await the release of the US September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation report for fresh clues on the Fed's interest rate path. Economists expect the headline CPI to show a rise of 3.6% YoY in September, compared to 3.4% in August. The core CPI is projected to show an increase of 2.5% YoY in September, compared to 2.4% in August.

"We have some inflation data that's coming out later this week. So market is kind of waiting to see how that plays out," said Bob Haberkorn, senior market strategist at StoneX.

If the reports show hotter-than-expected outcomes, this could reinforce the US central bank to hike interest rates and lift the US Dollar against its rivals.

Dollar underperforms as Fed tone softens and markets eye US CPI

Strategists at Scotiabank observe that recent communication from the Fed has turned less forceful, noting that “messaging from the Fed has been mixed but generally softening the intensity of the hawkish rhetoric in a manner that has delivered a clear moderation in tightening expectations overall.” They point out that “the market continues to price about 5bpts of tightening for October and 25bpts by December,” a shift that has fed into a weaker Dollar profile.

In their view, this repricing is increasingly visible in the broader Dollar indices, with Scotiabank highlighting that “the DXY continues to trade above our fair value estimate, with fundamentals that generally reflect the recent softening in Fed expectations and an overall (USD-negative) narrowing in interest rate differentials.” Near term, they add that the domestic data calendar offers little to challenge this trend, as “Monday’s US data calendar is light, and limited to existing home sales ahead of the top-tier CPI data scheduled for Wednesday.”

Williams downplays 2027 hike risks, supports softer Dollar tone

Fed’s Williams delivered a notably more dovish tone, with the FXS Speechtracker score at 3.4/10, well below the 5.8/10 historical average and signaling reduced tightening bias. The explicit remark that there is “no need for rate hike in 2027” and confidence that inflation will slow “quite a bit” toward the 2% target next year reinforces expectations of a prolonged pause and eventual easing, a configuration that tends to weigh on the Dollar and support risk-sensitive FX.

The FXS Fed Sentiment Index fell by 3.09 points to 133.86, marking a clear pullback in perceived hawkishness even as the index remains firmly above the neutral 100 threshold. This combination of a lower FXS Fed Sentiment Index reading and a weak FXS Speechtracker score indicates that while policy is still in hawkish territory compared to the established baseline, the marginal shift in tone is toward less aggressive tightening, a nuance the Dollar and rates markets are likely to price in.

Chart Analysis Dollar Index Spot

Technical Analysis: US Dollar Index maintains a constructive outlook above the 100-day SMA

In the daily chart, Dollar Index Spot holds above both the 20-day simple moving average of the Bollinger Bands and the 100-day simple moving average (SMA), keeping the near-term bias bullish as price extends its recovery away from the lower band support. The Relative Strength Index (14) at 64.47 suggests firm positive momentum without yet reaching overbought territory, hinting that buying pressure remains in control while upside appears gradually stretched.

On the topside, the next key hurdle emerges at the Bollinger upper band, currently around 102.95, which caps the immediate bullish scope and could trigger consolidation if tested. On the downside, initial support is seen at the Bollinger middle band at 101.50, ahead of the 100-day SMA at 100.40 and the lower band region near 100.05, where a deeper pullback would be expected to attract dip buyers as long as the broader structure remains above these underlying demand levels.

US Dollar FAQs

The US Dollar (USD) is the official currency of the United States of America, and the ‘de facto’ currency of a significant number of other countries where it is found in circulation alongside local notes. It is the most heavily traded currency in the world, accounting for over 88% of all global foreign exchange turnover, or an average of $6.6 trillion in transactions per day, according to data from 2022. Following the second world war, the USD took over from the British Pound as the world’s reserve currency. For most of its history, the US Dollar was backed by Gold, until the Bretton Woods Agreement in 1971 when the Gold Standard went away.

The most important single factor impacting on the value of the US Dollar is monetary policy, which is shaped by the Federal Reserve (Fed). The Fed has two mandates: to achieve price stability (control inflation) and foster full employment. Its primary tool to achieve these two goals is by adjusting interest rates. When prices are rising too quickly and inflation is above the Fed’s 2% target, the Fed will raise rates, which helps the USD value. When inflation falls below 2% or the Unemployment Rate is too high, the Fed may lower interest rates, which weighs on the Greenback.

In extreme situations, the Federal Reserve can also print more Dollars and enact quantitative easing (QE). QE is the process by which the Fed substantially increases the flow of credit in a stuck financial system. It is a non-standard policy measure used when credit has dried up because banks will not lend to each other (out of the fear of counterparty default). It is a last resort when simply lowering interest rates is unlikely to achieve the necessary result. It was the Fed’s weapon of choice to combat the credit crunch that occurred during the Great Financial Crisis in 2008. It involves the Fed printing more Dollars and using them to buy US government bonds predominantly from financial institutions. QE usually leads to a weaker US Dollar.

Quantitative tightening (QT) is the reverse process whereby the Federal Reserve stops buying bonds from financial institutions and does not reinvest the principal from the bonds it holds maturing in new purchases. It is usually positive for the US Dollar.
