TradingKey – Panama is exploring the use of Bitcoin for canal transit payments, with potential plans to establish a strategic BTC reserve.
According to Coindesk (May 30), Panama is considering allowing vessels to pay transit fees through the Panama Canal using Bitcoin (BTC).
Panama City Mayor Mayer Mizrachi stated that enabling BTC payments could help reduce wait times for ships passing through the canal.
Previously, Panama passed a law permitting BTC payments for various fees, including taxes, parking fines, licenses and other charges.
The Panama Canal is one of the world’s most crucial maritime trade routes, connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, with over 10,000 vessels transiting annually. Integrating BTC payments could enhance Bitcoin’s role in global commerce, encouraging its adoption in shipping, trade, and logistics.
