DeepSeek plans to release key codes and data to the public starting next week

DeepSeek is ready to show the world the core of its technology. The Chinese AI star plans to share key codes and data with the public starting next week. This move will clear the air of accusations of copying Silicon Valley tech giants’ technologies.

DeepSeek announced, “We’re a tiny team exploring AGI. Starting next week, we’ll be open-sourcing 5 repos, sharing our small but sincere progress with full transparency.”

The company intends to make its code repositories open to all developers and scholars.  This allows anyone to download, build on, or upgrade the code behind the well-known R1 or other platforms.

By letting anyone know its code secrets, DeepSeek is encouraging more people to use its technology. The AI is already making governments from the US to Australia worry about security, so the strategy would help them earn trust.

DeepSeek is also stepping up its efforts to promote an open-source approach to AI development. This has gained traction after its models outperformed OpenAI and Meta Platforms Inc. (META) competitors in benchmark testing.

Companies like Meta have already made their models public, allowing users to customize the platform for their own applications. OpenAI began as primarily open source but has recently retreated from that goal.

What will DeepSeek reveal?

DeepSeek will be showing 5 repos. What does this mean? Coding repositories, also known as “code repos,” are special types of storage systems that are made to keep track of source code and other assets used in software development.

Think of them as the home base for your code. Every line of code, configuration file, and piece of data lives there together peacefully.

Code libraries are more than just places to store code, though. They are active, smart systems that keep track of all changes, make sure that developers can work together, and keep the whole part of your project.

The Hangzhou-based startup said its technology has been fully tested, deployed, and documented.

This doubles the company’s commitment to open source. Most AI companies in China, like their U.S. competitors, lean toward closed-source models, which makes the company stand out.

OpenAI and Anthropic, two world competitors, still don’t share their AI models, data repositories, or data.

Not to compare DeepSeek with its competitors. A lot of money has been put into the AI industry by investors in the biggest US startups, such as Anthropic PBC and xAI. They hope to make a lot of money in the future.

However, DeepSeek came from founder Liang Wenfeng’s quantitative trading fund. The company hasn’t said if it has any outside funding yet, so it may not have as much pressure to find a way to make money.

Liang said, “Having others follow your innovation gives a great sense of accomplishment […] In fact, open source is more of a cultural behavior than a commercial one, and contributing to it earns us respect”

Google is challenged to take DeepSeek’s strategy

Google CEO Sundar Pichai praised DeepSeek. This comes after he downplayed the AI startup earlier in the month. He said that the Chinese company had shaken up the industry by showing speed and usability improvements.

Pichai said that the most interesting things about DeepSeek were that it was open source and that it was made to be efficient. He said that it is something that Google and other companies in the same field have been working on improving in recent months.

Pichai said, “I think what caught people’s attention with DeepSeek was that you could have an efficient model and open source and something everyone can immediately access, and I think that creates a lot of excitement.”

He said that Google was also working on similar ideas. He said, “But it’s something obviously we are focused on as well. We’ve always realized the models which you serve people around the world it has to be very efficient.”

Pichai said that Google’s optimized Gemini models, also known as Flash. This proves that the company was already thinking about how to make things more efficient and easy for everyone to use.

Baidu Inc. (BIDU), a bigger and more well-known competitor, has had to adopt the open-source framework because of DeepSeek’s surprising growth.
