Elon Musk’s DOGE could be on a collision course with Trump supporters with NASA assignment

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, recently began an audit of NASA’s spending and contracts. The department is paying particular attention to the Artemis project, which was set up to lead another trip to the moon.

The Artemis program was launched during President Donald Trump’s first term and has experienced cost overruns and delays. The program has flown only one mission since launch and due to delays, it postponed the first crewed lunar landing to 2027.

The program has faced heavy criticism from several organizations and individuals, including the CEO of SpaceX and DOGE leader, Elon Musk. Ironically, SpaceX plays a key role in Artemis and has a multibillion-dollar contract to build a lunar lander.

Now, Elon Musk is spearheading the investigation into NASA. It’s unclear so far how thorough the audit will be as it is still in its early stages.

The Artemis audit could have political implications

While it’s unclear how much DOGE intends to change the Artemis program, the program might encounter significant challenges with Trump’s incoming political appointees.

DOGE could be in the position to disrupt NASA’s moon program through discussions with the Office of Management and Budget. The decision about whether or not to continue funding the program will ultimately come down to Congress, which retains sole charge of approving any proposed changes to specific programs.

Senator Ted Cruz said that he plans on reintroducing a NASA authorization bill “very soon” that will mandate no changes to Artemis for at least a year. But under the new administration, it is unclear whether the bill will be approved.

Many Republican lawmakers have fallen in line with Trump and his agenda. However, lawmakers like Cruz and Babin remain staunch believers in NASA’s mission to recreate the moon landing.

Other Republican lawmakers are embracing Musk’s efforts to shrink the US government, even if it comes at the cost of jobs. The Artemis program supports tens of thousands of jobs in states like Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. Texas.

“I think that his involvement is great. I think we ought to figure out how to do things the most efficient way we can.” Senator Rick Scott, a Florida Republican, said in an interview.

DOGE’s NASA audit

DOGE’s audit of NASA’s expenditures and contracts will especially scrutinize the $93B Artemis program. The efficiency watchdog’s first order of business was to analyze the workforce data. It pledged a comprehensive audit of the agency’s spending. NASA Administrator Janet Petro confirmed DOGE’s presence and intentions.

“They are going to look — similarly to what they’ve done at other agencies — at our payments,” he said.

The Department of Government Efficiency has mapped out NASA’s management structure, including employee demographics and salaries.

Musk previously criticized the program, describing it as “extremely inefficient” and a “jobs-maximizing program, not a results-maximizing program.”

Despite the critiques, delays and cost overruns, the Artemis Program is an important part of local economies and as a result Congress has funneled billions of dollars to the program for years.
