Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.47%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.47%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Mattr Corp (TSX:MATR), which rose 16.27% or 2.13 points to trade at 15.22 at the close. Superior Plus Corp (TSX:SPB) added 14.64% or 0.82 points to end at 6.42 and NuVista Energy Ltd . (TSX:NVA) was up 8.55% or 1.00 points to 12.70 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Sandstorm Gold Ltd . (TSX:SSL), which lost 8.55% or 0.75 points to trade at 8.02 in late trade. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) declined 7.56% or 1.55 points to end at 18.94 and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN) shed 7.27% or 1.45 points to 18.50.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 539 to 360 and 100 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.30% to 11.57.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.39% or 10.50 to $2,695.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 2.53% or 1.83 to hit $70.53 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 2.12% or 1.60 to trade at $74.03 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.37% to 0.72, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.45% to 0.67.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.49% at 104.88.
