On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, Sonoco (NYSE:SON) updated its full-year 2026 financial guidance. For long-term investors, transient weather disruptions to crop yields matter far less than structural cost controls. Management is relying on internal efficiency programs to offset rising raw material expenses.

Three takeaways from the call highlight management's operational priorities.

1. Internal Cost Savings Accelerate to Offset Inflationary Headwinds

To combat rising input costs, the company relies on its Profitability Performance Plan, a three-year structural cost reduction program known as PPP. The initiative generated $16 million in savings during the third quarter, marking its largest quarterly contribution to date.

The plan delivered $16 million of savings in the third quarter, up from $10 million in the second quarter, $8 million in the first.
-- Paul Joachimczyk, Chief Financial Officer

2. Contract Reset Delays Temporarily Lag Industrial Price Realization

Higher costs for old corrugated containers, which are recycled cardboard boxes used as raw material and known as OCC, pushed industrial production costs higher. Contractual lag prevented full price recovery during the quarter, but implemented price increases take full effect in early 2027.

Because of the timing of the most recent increase, we will realize some of the benefit in the fourth quarter with the full impact showing up as we move into 2027.
-- Howard Coker, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Facility Closures and Reorganization Target Structural Margin Improvement

Management consolidated its global packaging operations into a single consumer packaging unit to streamline operational execution. As part of this consolidation, the business is closing two European facilities to eliminate excess overhead and lower fixed costs.

We are also accelerating footprint optimization by closing 2 sites in Europe, which we will expect to generate $15 million to $20 million of savings in 2027.
-- Paul Joachimczyk, Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Industrial packaging demand remains steady across key end markets, supported by infrastructure spending for wire and cable reels, which are heavy-duty spools used for power cables. High operating rates in uncoated recycled paperboard, a dense paper material used for tubes and cores and known as URB, reflect solid market positioning. Operational execution and cost pass-throughs remain primary focus areas.

In Industrial, we're benefiting from strong URB demand and continued growth in reels.
-- Howard Coker, President and Chief Executive Officer

Structural cost savings and consolidated global operations position the business to rebuild earnings power over time.

Most importantly, we remain confident in our strategy, our market-leading positions and the ability of our team to execute through economic cycles.
-- Howard Coker, President and Chief Executive Officer

Brent's $115 front month sits $4.6 above January — the $14 spread to WTI is the supply-risk premiumDecember Brent trades at $115.29 while January is $110.71, a $4.58 backwardation. The December Brent-WTI spread is $14.2, versus a $3-5 normal. That gap, not the headline, is where the Middle East supply risk is priced. Here is what the curve says, why the December contract's expiry on October 30 will mechanically cut the headline by $4.6, and the 108.81 neckline that decides the next move.
