Although the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution garners most of the credit for sending Wall Street's major stock indexes to new heights, don't overlook initial public offering (IPO) euphoria as a stock market catalyst in 2026.

A little over four months ago, on June 12, Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ:SPCX), better known as SpaceX, rewrote Wall Street's record books. SpaceX went public at a $1.77 trillion valuation, raising $85.7 trillion from its IPO, including the underwriters' overallotment. This nearly tripled Saudi Aramco's $29.4 trillion IPO cash raise.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

But not all of SpaceX's history-making moments are worth celebrating. Today, Oct. 22, Musk's AI and space infrastructure goliath will make dubious history, with retail investors set to pay the price.

Another SpaceX insider share-unlock event has arrived

There wasn't much about the SpaceX IPO process that followed historic norms, including the company's insider lockup period. An insider is a high-ranking executive, board member, or early investor who may possess non-public information.

Usually, companies going public employ a 180-calendar-day lockup period that prevents insiders from selling their shares. This is done to ensure that insiders don't take advantage of retail investor euphoria shortly after a company debuts.

In SpaceX's May 2026 prospectus, the company outlined a staggered and accelerated share-unlock period for its early-release-eligible insiders. In simpler terms, Elon Musk wouldn't be able to sell his shares for 366 calendar days after SpaceX's IPO, but most of the company's other insiders would be given several opportunities to sell some of their shares before the traditional 180-calendar-day mark.

SpaceX's share-unlock events fall into two categories, of which the first is earnings-based events. On Aug. 6, two trading days after SpaceX reported its second-quarter operating results, roughly 911.5 million shares became eligible for sale by select insiders.

Today, Oct. 22, marks the second trading day after Space Exploration Technologies' third-quarter report and, therefore, the release of another 911.5 million shares by insiders. This could provide up to $133 billion in selling pressure.

In addition to earnings-based events, approximately 319 million shares become newly eligible for sale on calendar days 70, 90, 105, 120, 135, and 180. Given that the 135th calendar day lands on a weekend, this coming Monday, Oct. 26, will mark the release of another 319 million shares.

We're witnessing the greatest wealth transfer in Wall Street's history

This staggered and accelerated share lockup period for early-release-eligible insiders poses a significant problem for SpaceX's retail investors.

When the company went public, it sold approximately 555.6 million shares, or less than 5% of its outstanding shares (OS). Most companies going public sell 10% or more of their OS.

SpaceX gaining fast-track entry into the Nasdaq-100, Russell 1000, and Russell 3000 with its historically low float provided quite the boost to the company's share price for a few weeks after its debut. But with each new share-unlock event, SpaceX's float is rapidly climbing and threatening to weigh on its shares.

These ongoing share lockups also allow eligible insiders their first opportunity in years, if not a decade, to cash in their chips. What we're witnessing is one of the greatest wealth transfers in the history of Wall Street, from retail investors to SpaceX's insiders.

This unique approach rewards SpaceX's early investors and can punish retail investors.
