I've Been Wrong About Coca-Cola Stock for 5 Years. Here's Why I'm Finally Changing My Mind.

Source Motley_fool

Key Points

  • Coca-Cola is still growing: Strong organic sales, volume growth across every region, and momentum from Coca-Cola Zero Sugar show the business is evolving, not stagnating.

  • Few companies can consistently raise prices, generate billions in free cash flow, and grow dividends for decades.

  • Coca-Cola may not be a high-flying growth stock, but its consistency makes it a compelling long-term compounder.

  • 10 stocks we like better than Coca-Cola ›

For years, I filed Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) stock under "fine, but why bother?" on my list of investment options. I saw a 130-year-old soda company facing a world turning against sugar, and I assumed it would plod along while faster-moving names sprinted past it.

After watching Coca-Cola lately, I have had to admit I was reading it wrong.

The growth I said wasn't there

The story I told myself was that soda is a shrinking business. The company's July quarter made that story hard to defend. Organic revenue rose 6% year over year, and unit case volume grew across every single operating segment, not just one lucky region. More telling was where the growth came from. Coca-Cola Zero Sugar jumped 16%, and Fairlife, its high-protein dairy brand, climbed in the first half of the year.

That is not a company clinging to old habits. It is one quietly reshaping what it sells, meeting the health shift rather than getting run over by it. Management was confident enough to raise its full-year outlook.

Why the durability finally won me over

What changed my mind is not one quarter but what it revealed. In a jittery market, Coca-Cola kept nudging prices higher without driving customers away, the kind of pricing power most companies would envy. It generates enormous free cash flow, is on track for roughly $12 billion this year, and has raised its dividend for more than six decades straight. I used to see that steadiness as boring. Now I see it as rare. The push into no-sugar and protein-forward drinks tells me the real moat is not just the brand, but the willingness to keep evolving it.

I am not pretending the risks vanished. The stock is not cheap, currency swings can dent reported results, and the longer-run question of how weight-loss drugs and health trends reshape beverages is a real one.

This is still a slow-and-steady compounder, not a rocket. But that is exactly the point I missed for five years, and I'm tired of falling behind. For investors who want dependable growth, a fortress balance sheet, and a rising dividend to hold through whatever the market throws next, Coca-Cola has earned a fresh look.

I would rather admit I was wrong to dismiss it than keep overlooking a business that is this consistent and profitable. It will not double overnight, but for the patient, that reliability is starting to look like the feature, not the flaw.
