Polymarket Gives 18% Odds to a Tesla-SpaceX Merger Announcement in 2026

Polymarket traders assign just an 18% probability that Tesla and SpaceX will officially announce a merger before the end of 2026, despite months of speculation about the two companies.

The odds reveal deep skepticism, even as operational overlap among Elon Musk’s flagship firms continues to grow.

What the Prediction Markets Actually Show

A prediction market lets participants trade contracts on future events, with prices reflecting estimated probability. Polymarket’s December 31 contract trades around 18 cents.

The nearer-term outlook looks bleaker. The September 30 contract sits at roughly 5%, suggesting almost no chance of an imminent announcement. Volume indicates genuine interest. Activity across the relevant contracts has exceeded $1 million.

Timing explains part of the caution. SpaceX shares tumbled 12% after its first public earnings report following the June 2026 IPO. The results themselves looked solid. Revenue reached $7.8 billion, up 92% year-over-year, while the company narrowed its net loss.

Investors focused elsewhere entirely. Capital expenditures topped $18 billion in the quarter, largely directed toward artificial intelligence infrastructure. The reaction was swift. Shares fell roughly 8% to 11% as markets digested heavy spending plans alongside an impending lockup expiration.

Business convergence continues in the meantime. Shared ambitions span artificial intelligence, robotics (including Optimus), autonomous driving data, and potential space-based data centers.

Analysts have floated ambitious numbers. Valuations for a combined entity could approach or exceed $5 trillion, according to some projections.

The Obstacles Standing in the Way

A separate development could matter more. Reports indicate Tesla is weighing options to separate or sell its China business. The Wall Street Journal detailed internal discussions. Executives reportedly explored a spin-off, sale, or structural separation of the Shanghai operations.

The geopolitical logic is straightforward. SpaceX serves as a key US defense contractor, making any combination with a company deeply embedded in China politically sensitive.

Musk rejected the report forcefully. He dismissed it as absurdly fake news, insisting the topic had never been discussed internally. China remains commercially significant regardless, ranking second for Tesla and accounting for a substantial share of global vehicle production.

Structural obstacles remain substantial. Regulatory scrutiny, shareholder preferences for pure-play companies, and valuation mismatches all weigh on sentiment.

Integration complexity adds another layer. Combining a profitable automotive business with a capital-intensive space and AI operation presents genuine difficulty.

Process requirements matter too. Any merger would require board approvals and formal procedures, which Musk has emphasized cannot be discussed casually.

Traders appear to view an announcement as possible but improbable. The market is pricing caution rather than conviction for now.
