How Andrew Tate's legal troubles could push CLARITY Act down Trump's priority list

With Democratic House Representative from Arizona, Yassamin Ansari beating a path to get Barron Trump to testify on ties with fellow crypto bros, Andrew and Tristan Tate, President Trump is expected to have as high a stake as the digital asset lobby in ensuring that the Republican Party comes out of the mid-term elections still holding its majority.

As noted in previous Cryptopolitan reports, the crypto industry is working with an arbitrary deadline around the time Congress breaks in August and ramps up for November’s mid-term elections to get its signature market-structure bill (CLARITY Act) passed.

Missing that deadline, which seems like a likely scenario per Polymarket odds, could result in a worse fate than a temporary stall if a Democratic House emerges from election season. For President Trump, it also means that his youngest son could be subpoenaed in the case against the Tates.

Why are Democrats going after Barron Trump?

A target landed on Barron Trump’s back last week when James Comer, the Republican chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, received a letter last week from committee member Rep. Yassamin Ansari. The missive was a request to kickstart an investigation into the nature of the relationship between the Tate brothers and the president’s family, including his 20-year-old son, Barron.

What does Ansari want the House oversight committee to do? In her letter, she proposed issuing a subpoena to check if Barron had “any involvement” with the rape and trafficking allegations that Andrew and Tristan Tate are facing. Ansari also said the subpoena could be used to check whether the president’s family had any hand in resolving any of the Tate duo’s legal troubles.

Ansari repeated those points during an appearance on the July 25 episode of the MeidasTouch podcast. The House Democrat did not yield to questions about Barron’s age or whether he was actively involved in the Trump admin either.

According to her, “Barron Trump is an adult. He is a full-blown adult, and he is very influential in the Trump White House orbit.”

The UK is seeking to extradite the Tate brothers after they were arrested in Miami on July 18 for crimes alleged to have happened between 2010 and 2017. The brothers deny the charges.

What will happen to Barron Trump now?

Republicans hold a slim House majority, so Ansari’s request is unlikely to move. Oversight subpoenas need the votes, and the chair holds the gavel. That changes if Democrats take the House in November, when the committee’s power to compel testimony would pass to the other side.

The stakes are personal for the president. Barron, who turned 20 in March, is credited, including by his father, with steering Trump toward manosphere figures such as Tate during the 2024 campaign. He is also a co-founder of the family venture World Liberty Financial, and his crypto holdings are estimated at roughly $150 million.

Barron Trump has become the latest Trump to enter the crosshairs of the Democrat party. However, this one also appears to be destined to run into a wall just as earlier attempts to force what the opposition perceives as accountability under the current Republican majority.

Why crypto wants the vote before recess

Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters on July 23 that the Clarity Act would probably miss its window before the chamber’s summer break. Negotiators had circled August 7 as the date the bill needed to clear the Senate to keep a realistic shot at becoming law in 2026.

Thune said he would “like to at least get Clarity started,” leaving open a narrow path in September. On Polymarket, the odds of passage have slid to about 38%, down from more than 80% in the spring, Cryptopolitan reported.

The bill would move most crypto tokens beyond the SEC’s reach by treating them as non-securities, and it takes up whether platforms can pay interest on stablecoins. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon backed it this week. JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon has fought the stablecoin yield language.

Crypto’s cash is chasing the same election

The industry is not sitting the fight out. Cryptocurrency, AI, and Big Tech companies have together spent $294 million on this cycle’s races, more than half of all corporate outside spending, Data for Progress reported on July 28.

The same survey also found that Democratic candidates who take crypto money tend to underperform those who reject corporate PAC cash, an awkward wrinkle for an industry trying to buy goodwill on both sides before a bill it badly wants.

For Trump, the ledger reads plainly. The CLARITY Act is a priority. Keeping his son clear of the Tate case, should the House flip, looks like the higher one.
