Bitcoin Returns to ETF Holders’ Breakeven Price, and $729 Million Heads for the Exit

US spot Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded fund (ETF) investors pulled $729 million over two sessions this week. The selling hit just as BTC returned to the funds’ estimated average entry price, suggesting holders are treating breakeven as an exit door.

The headline figure hides a sharp split, however. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) remains a net buyer in October, while Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) alone has lost more than the entire market.

Why Are Bitcoin ETF Holders Selling at Breakeven?

Bloomberg Intelligence ETF analyst James Seyffart estimates the average US spot Bitcoin ETF holder paid $81,722 per coin. When BTC cleared that level in late September, he flagged the shift publicly.

Two weeks later, that cushion has largely evaporated. Bitcoin trades at $81,607, down 2.2% over 24 hours, according to BeInCrypto’s Bitcoin market data.

At that level, the average ETF position sits marginally underwater again.

Holders did not wait to find out. US spot Bitcoin ETFs shed $484.9 million on Oct. 7, according to Farside data. That reversed a $118.8 million inflow from the previous session.

Another $244.1 million left on Oct. 8. The two sessions wiped out October’s early gains, leaving month-to-date net flows at minus $407.4 million.

Breakeven selling is a familiar behavioral pattern. Investors who sat through months of losses often exit once they recover their capital, which can turn a cost basis into resistance.

Is This a Bitcoin ETF Exit or a Fidelity Problem?

Fund-level data tells a narrower story than the headline total. Farside figures for Oct. 1 to Oct. 8 show the outflows concentrated in a handful of issuers.

FundNet flow, Oct. 1 to 8
Fidelity FBTC–$408.1 million
ARK 21Shares ARKB–$214.9 million
Grayscale GBTC–$78.9 million
Bitwise BITB–$52.2 million
BlackRock IBIT+$332.5 million
All US spot Bitcoin ETFs–$407.4 million

FBTC’s withdrawals exceed the market’s entire net outflow. The fund posted outflows in five of October’s six trading sessions.

IBIT, by contrast, absorbed $332.5 million. Excluding BlackRock’s fund, the remaining ETFs lost a combined $739.9 million.

Still, IBIT was not immune once BTC reached breakeven. It shed $207.7 million on Oct. 7, its largest withdrawal of the month.

The divergence suggests the selling sits with specific investor bases rather than reflecting a uniform retreat from Bitcoin exposure.

The pressure also extends beyond Bitcoin. US spot Ethereum ETFs have now logged eight straight sessions of outflows, losing $641.3 million since Sept. 29, per Farside. BeInCrypto earlier tracked the Ethereum ETF outflow streak as it built.

Spot ETFs were a major buyer during September’s rally, absorbing more than $2.3 billion between Sept. 21 and Sept. 30 alone. That demand now appears anchored to a price level rather than to long-term conviction.

The broader test is whether these funds can attract new buyers once breakeven no longer offers an easy exit.
