Japanese Yen flatlines near 158.50 as markets seek direction

  • USD/JPY holds steady near 158.50 in Tuesday’s Asian session.
  • BoJ Governor Ueda says underlying inflation is rising very close to the bank's 2% target.
  • Traders are now pricing in an 82.8% odds that the Fed will leave borrowing costs unchanged next week.

The USD/JPY pair steadies around 158.50 during the Asian trading hours on Tuesday. Traders prefer to wait on the sidelines ahead of Japan’s National Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation data later on Friday. Meanwhile, elevated US bond yields provide some support to the US Dollar (USD) against the Japanese Yen (JPY).

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi denied the notion that she’s responsible for a weak JPY and high interest rates. Takaichi said that her administration will increase confidence in the domestic currency by building a strong economy, adding that she will appropriately control the issuance of Japanese government bonds in next fiscal year’s budget.

Separately, Bank of Japan (BoJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda stated that underlying inflation is rising very close to the BoJ’s 2% target. Ueda also said that long-term bond yields may rise if the market perceives that the Japanese central bank is not raising the benchmark policy interest rate at an appropriate pace.

US Treasury bond yields edge higher as traders size up the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) approach ahead of its policy-setting meeting at the end of the month. According to the CME FedWatch tool, traders see an 82.8% probability that the Fed will leave rates unchanged this month, while expectations for a hike in December remain near 93.6%.

Japan CPI seen edging higher as BoJ tightening expectations stay muted, keeping USD/JPY anchored

Analysts at Brown Brothers Harriman expect Japan’s September inflation data due Friday to show a modest acceleration, with “headline CPI … expected at 2.1% y/y vs. 1.9% in August, core CPI ex. fresh food … expected at 2.1% y/y vs. 1.7% in August, and core CPI ex. fresh food & energy CPI … expected at 2.3% y/y vs. 1.9% in August.” However, they stress that the BoJ is “unlikely to crank up the pace of tightening” given that headline and core CPI ex. fresh food & energy are still “tracking below its 2026 projection of 2.5%.”

In rates markets, Brown Brothers Harriman notes that “the swaps curve price in less than 5% odds of a 25bps BoJ rate hike to 1.50% on October 30, and 80% probability of a hike on December 18,” underscoring expectations for a gradual normalization path. Against this backdrop, the bank believes “that leaves USD/JPY likely to trade within a 155.00-160.00 range in the near term.”

Ueda leans mildly hawkish as BoJ ties policy to durable 2% inflation

FXS Speechtracker scores the speech at 7/10, slightly below Ueda’s historic 7.4/10, but the emphasis on “underlying inflation near 2%” and a positive wages–prices loop marks a mildly hawkish tilt versus past caution. Ueda highlights demand-led inflation from robust global demand, domestic capex and tight labor markets, while warning that miscalibrated policy could push long-term JGB yields higher, signaling greater readiness to tolerate firmer rates as long as the 2% goal is credibly in sight.

At the same time, Ueda stresses no change in the fundamental bond taper approach and rejects preannouncing emergency JGB measures, framing any intervention as conditional on the speed of long-term rate moves and market stability. This combination of confidence in achieving the 2% target, acknowledgement of both supply- and demand-driven price pressures, and commitment to keep financial conditions accommodative supports a view that BoJ policy is gradually normalizing, which is modestly supportive for the Yen but constrained by a cautious approach to bond market operations.

Chart Analysis USD/JPY

Technical Analysis: USD/JPY remains below the key 100-day SMA

In the daily chart, USD/JPY keeps a bearish near-term bias as spot remains under the 100-day simple moving average (SMA). Price is holding above the 20-day Bollinger middle band, while the Relative Strength Index (14) at 56.69 shows modest positive momentum that only partly offsets the pressure from the overhead trend resistance.

On the topside, immediate resistance is aligned at the 20-day Bollinger upper band near 158.92, followed by the 100-day SMA at 159.45 as a stronger cap. On the downside, initial support emerges at the Bollinger middle band around 158.05, ahead of the Bollinger lower band near 157.20, where buyers could attempt to slow any deeper pullback.

Japanese Yen FAQs

The Japanese Yen (JPY) is one of the world’s most traded currencies. Its value is broadly determined by the performance of the Japanese economy, but more specifically by the Bank of Japan’s policy, the differential between Japanese and US bond yields, or risk sentiment among traders, among other factors.

One of the Bank of Japan’s mandates is currency control, so its moves are key for the Yen. The BoJ has directly intervened in currency markets sometimes, generally to lower the value of the Yen, although it refrains from doing it often due to political concerns of its main trading partners. The BoJ ultra-loose monetary policy between 2013 and 2024 caused the Yen to depreciate against its main currency peers due to an increasing policy divergence between the Bank of Japan and other main central banks. More recently, the gradually unwinding of this ultra-loose policy has given some support to the Yen.

Over the last decade, the BoJ’s stance of sticking to ultra-loose monetary policy has led to a widening policy divergence with other central banks, particularly with the US Federal Reserve. This supported a widening of the differential between the 10-year US and Japanese bonds, which favored the US Dollar against the Japanese Yen. The BoJ decision in 2024 to gradually abandon the ultra-loose policy, coupled with interest-rate cuts in other major central banks, is narrowing this differential.

The Japanese Yen is often seen as a safe-haven investment. This means that in times of market stress, investors are more likely to put their money in the Japanese currency due to its supposed reliability and stability. Turbulent times are likely to strengthen the Yen’s value against other currencies seen as more risky to invest in.
