New Zealand Dollar holds steady above 0.5650 as PBOC holds Loan Prime Rates steady

  • NZD/USD flatlines near 0.5665 in Tuesday’s early Asian session.
  • PBOC leaves its Loan Prime Rates unchanged in October.
  • The Fed is anticipated to hold interest rates steady in its October policy meeting next week.

The NZD/USD pair trades on a flat note around 0.5665 during the early Asian trading hours on Tuesday. Traders prefer to wait on the sidelines ahead of New Zealand’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation data on Thursday.

Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) Chief Economist Paul Conway said that the interest rate decision in late October is “wide open,” even as inflation pressures build. The RBNZ has held its Official Cash Rate (OCR) at 2.75%, following a 25-basis-point hike in the September policy meeting.

Traders await New Zealand’s upcoming inflation data for this third quarter (Q3), which will guide the interest rate trajectory. The CPI is expected to show an increase of 0.8% QoQ in Q3, compared to 1.5% in the previous reading. Any signs of hotter inflation in New Zealand could boost the New Zealand Dollar (NZD) against the US Dollar (USD).

Elsewhere, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) decided on Tuesday to leave the Loan Prime Rates (LPRs) unchanged in October. The one-year and five-year LPRs were at 3.00% and 3.50%, respectively.

Federal Reserve (Fed) Chairman Kevin Warsh said during the 2026 IMF annual meetings in Bangkok on Friday that he does not "prejudge" interest-rate decisions, giving no preview of whether the central bank will hike or hold short-term rates steady at its upcoming October 27-28 meeting.

Traders awaited the Federal Reserve's (Fed) policy decision next week, when officials are expected to leave interest rates unchanged.

New Zealand inflation seen staying above target as RBNZ hike odds support the Dollar

Analysts at Brown Brothers Harriman highlight that New Zealand’s Q3 CPI data, due Wednesday, are expected to track closely with official projections. They note that “headline CPI is expected at 0.8% q/q (RBNZ projection: 0.8%) vs. 1.5% in Q2 to be up 3.8% y/y (RBNZ projection: 3.9%) vs. 4.1% in Q2.” According to BBH, this “above target inflation argues for additional RBNZ rate hikes and offers NZD support,” with the swaps curve currently pricing in “80% odds of a 25bps RBNZ rate hike to 3.00% on October 28.”

Warsh flags investment surge and AI risks but avoids policy pre-commitment

Fed Chair Warsh’s speech scores 5.6/10 on the FXS Speechtracker, modestly softer relative to the historical average of 6.1/10 and reflecting a cautious, data-dependent tone. The admission of being “over-scarred from the global financial crisis” underscores a persistent bias toward guarding against negative tails even amid optimism on structural growth and an investment surge driven by “good policies.” Warsh’s emphasis on not pre-judging the October and December meetings and on crystallizing views only as data on output, employment, and inflation evolve keeps the Dollar narrative anchored in conditional, rather than pre-committed, hawkishness.

The FXS Fed Sentiment Index was unchanged, moving 0.00 points to a still-elevated level of 127.51, signaling that the overall policy tone remains firmly in hawkish territory despite the slightly softer FXS Speechtracker score. The combination of a high index level and a flat daily change suggests markets see the Fed as maintaining a strong anti-inflation stance while Warsh’s focus on AI, financial stability, and tail risks adds nuance rather than shifting the core hawkish bias.

Chart Analysis NZD/USD

Technical Analysis: Negative outlook of NZD/USD remains intact below the 100-day SMA

In the daily chart, NZD/USD maintains a bearish bias as it holds below the 100-day Moving Average (MA). Price is also capped beneath the upper Bollinger Band, while the pair trades above the middle band support, suggesting a corrective bounce within a broader downside structure. The Relative Strength Index (14) at 48.37 has recovered toward neutral territory, hinting that bearish momentum is moderating rather than decisively reversing.

On the topside, initial resistance aligns with the upper Bollinger Band at 0.5685, followed by the 100-day MA at 0.5775, where a sustained break would be needed to ease the prevailing downward pressure. On the downside, immediate support emerges at the middle Bollinger band around 0.5630, ahead of the lower band near 0.5575, where a decisive move below the latter would likely reopen the path toward fresh cycle lows.

New Zealand Dollar FAQs

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD), also known as the Kiwi, is a well-known traded currency among investors. Its value is broadly determined by the health of the New Zealand economy and the country’s central bank policy. Still, there are some unique particularities that also can make NZD move. The performance of the Chinese economy tends to move the Kiwi because China is New Zealand’s biggest trading partner. Bad news for the Chinese economy likely means less New Zealand exports to the country, hitting the economy and thus its currency. Another factor moving NZD is dairy prices as the dairy industry is New Zealand’s main export. High dairy prices boost export income, contributing positively to the economy and thus to the NZD.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) aims to achieve and maintain an inflation rate between 1% and 3% over the medium term, with a focus to keep it near the 2% mid-point. To this end, the bank sets an appropriate level of interest rates. When inflation is too high, the RBNZ will increase interest rates to cool the economy, but the move will also make bond yields higher, increasing investors’ appeal to invest in the country and thus boosting NZD. On the contrary, lower interest rates tend to weaken NZD. The so-called rate differential, or how rates in New Zealand are or are expected to be compared to the ones set by the US Federal Reserve, can also play a key role in moving the NZD/USD pair.

Macroeconomic data releases in New Zealand are key to assess the state of the economy and can impact the New Zealand Dollar’s (NZD) valuation. A strong economy, based on high economic growth, low unemployment and high confidence is good for NZD. High economic growth attracts foreign investment and may encourage the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to increase interest rates, if this economic strength comes together with elevated inflation. Conversely, if economic data is weak, NZD is likely to depreciate.

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) tends to strengthen during risk-on periods, or when investors perceive that broader market risks are low and are optimistic about growth. This tends to lead to a more favorable outlook for commodities and so-called ‘commodity currencies’ such as the Kiwi. Conversely, NZD tends to weaken at times of market turbulence or economic uncertainty as investors tend to sell higher-risk assets and flee to the more-stable safe havens.
