Hackers Trying to Brute Force Their Way into Mt. Gox Accounts Amidst Repayments

Source Livebitcoinnews

Mt. Gox creditors reported hackers trying to log into their accounts multiple times, with the defunct exchange sending them notifications through numerous failed attempts. As the exchange began paying its creditors, cybercriminals focused on breaking into their accounts to siphon large sums of bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash.

Reddit users on the r/mtgoxinsolvency subreddit posted their experiences, confused about what to do now that they experienced the hacking attempts. User u/ovkovk posted, “Just received 15 notifications for account login. Now can’t get into my account. Is mtgox under attack???” They added, “Still getting login emails. 22 so far.”

Such attempts indicate that hackers are trying to brute-force their way into accounts, hoping to access them with luck. u/ovkovk also mentioned “at this point you can’t do payee info change,” which may come as a relief to many involved in this process as hackers will not be able to alter details about the repayment destinations and collect the funds themselves.

Multiple other users reported their experiences of anxiously witnessing notifications and emails triggered by login attempts from hackers. However, nobody has come forward with a story of a successful exploit.

One user explained the most plausible reason for the hacking attempts, saying how the hacker(s) may have acquired a list of Mt. Gox users and their email IDs, which they are using to brute force their way into any account possible. “As long as you have a 2FA you should “hopefully” be fine,” they advised.

The Mt. Gox claims page was made inactive by the Mt. Gox team when this news broke to prevent hackers from wreaking havoc on creditors who have waited a decade to receive their funds. “This website is temporarily down for maintenance,” the page read.
