As the digital advertising landscape shifts toward automation and streaming media, AppLovin (NASDAQ:APP) and Magnite (NASDAQ:MGNI) offer two distinct ways to invest. Readers must decide which model offers the best potential for 2026.

AppLovin focuses on high-speed growth within the mobile gaming and software ecosystem, while Magnite positions itself as critical independent infrastructure for the connected TV market. These companies are often compared because they both provide the essential technology that connects advertisers with digital audiences across various screens.

The case for AppLovin

AppLovin provides a comprehensive marketing platform that enables businesses to advertise and measure their performance effectively. The company is a major player among tech stocks that specialize in mobile software and user acquisition. Following its divestiture of the Apps business in June 2025, the company has refocused its resources on software tools like Axon Ads Manager and MAX.

In its 2025 fiscal year (FY), revenue reached $5.5 billion, marking an impressive 70% increase over the previous year. This growth was accompanied by net income of $3.3 billion, reflecting a sharp rise from the $1.6 billion reported in the prior year. The company has shown a significant ability to grow its bottom line alongside its top-line expansion.

According to its December 2025 balance sheet, the company carried a debt-to-equity ratio of 1.7x. This ratio measures total debt against shareholder equity, with a higher number indicating more reliance on borrowed funds. The current ratio, which compares current assets to current liabilities, was 3.3x. Furthermore, free cash flow was $3.9 billion in FY 2025, representing the cash remaining after a company pays for its operations and capital expenses.

The case for Magnite

Magnite operates as a sell-side advertising platform, helping publishers sell their digital ad space across various formats. While it handles mobile and desktop inventory, its primary growth engine is the connected TV market. The company maintains a significant three-year partnership with LG Electronics-owned LG Ad Solutions, providing specialized ad serving and programmatic technology for video content.

For FY 2025, revenue reached $714.0 million, representing a year-over-year growth rate of 6.9%. The company achieved net income of $144.6 million during this period, a substantial improvement over the $22.8 million earned in 2024. This trend suggests Magnite is beginning to convert more of its revenue into actual profit as it scales its streaming presence.

On its December 2025 balance sheet, the company reported a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.7x. This indicates a relatively conservative use of debt compared to its equity base. The current ratio was 1.0x, reflecting its ability to cover short-term obligations with its existing assets. Free cash flow for FY 2025 was $165.6 million. Note that stock-based compensation (SBC) represented 32.5% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

Risk profile comparison

AppLovin faces risks from its heavy reliance on third-party mobile platforms like Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Changes to privacy policies, such as the Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA), can disrupt the company's ability to target ads effectively. Additionally, the business is navigating legal challenges, including securities class action lawsuits and litigation regarding how it targets advertisements to younger audiences.

Magnite must contend with intense competition from massive, well-capitalized tech companies like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). The business is also highly dependent on how quickly publishers adopt programmatic selling within the connected TV market. Furthermore, strict data privacy regulations across the globe create ongoing compliance costs and could limit the data Magnite uses for its advertising platform.

Valuation comparison

AppLovin trades at a lower multiple of its future earnings estimates, while Magnite offers a significantly lower valuation based on its sales over the past twelve months.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

I worked in the digital advertising industry for years, and given my experience, I would invest in AppLovin over Magnite, even though many of my former colleagues now are at Magnite and the stock is doing well, up about 30% in 2026.

AppLovin and Magnite operate in different niches of the digital advertising ecosystem. The former focuses on advertisers trying to reach customers, while the latter is a platform for publishers and website owners to monetize their digital properties with ads. In my experience, investing in AppLovin's advertiser-centric business model is superior.

Advertisers always need to reach consumers, whether it's for the holiday shopping season or to promote a special event or sale. That's why retailers like Amazon jumped into the digital advertising arena.

Although competition is fierce for ad dollars, AppLovin's double-digit revenue growth demonstrates its ability to capture its fair share of this market. Now is a good time to consider buying shares, as AppLovin's stock hovers around a 52-week low.
