Choosing between the volatile world of digital assets and a steady global brokerage requires careful analysis. This comparison looks at Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN) and Interactive Brokers Group (NASDAQ:IBKR) to help determine which is a better buy.

Coinbase leads the way in digital asset adoption, transitioning from a simple exchange to a diversified product offering spanning the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Interactive Brokers provides investors with low-cost access to nearly every asset class worldwide. Both companies benefit from rising trading activity, but their underlying business models cater to very different types of market participants.

The case for Coinbase

Coinbase generates revenue primarily by facilitating the trade and custody of digital assets like Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC). To diversify revenue, the company is currently building what it calls an "everything exchange" that includes derivatives, prediction markets, and autonomous payment systems. It serves retail investors, institutional clients, and developers via its proprietary Layer 2 blockchain, Base.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $7.2 billion, representing an increase of approximately 9.4% over the prior year. The company reported net income of roughly $1.3 billion for the period, which resulted in a net margin of close to 17.6%. This performance reflects a continued recovery in crypto market activity compared to previous years.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is approximately 0.5x. This ratio measures total debt relative to shareholder equity, indicating a moderate level of leverage. Operating cash flow for FY 2025 was nearly $2.4 billion. Note that stock-based compensation (SBC) represented roughly 34.6% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

The case for Interactive Brokers

Interactive Brokers operates as a highly automated electronic brokerage platform for individual and institutional traders globally. It provides direct market access to stocks, options, futures, and other asset classes across more than 170 electronic exchanges and market centers worldwide. The company focuses on proprietary technology, low-cost trade execution, and high-interest yields on uninvested cash to service its 4.4 million client accounts.

For the full year 2025, Interactive Brokers delivered strong top-line expansion, reporting total net revenues of $6.21 billion, a robust 19.7% growth compared to the prior year. Net income allocated specifically to public common shareholders reached $984.0 million, driving the core earnings metrics that market valuations are built on. It is worth mentioning that because of the company's unique corporate structure, these public figures represent only a small piece of the total brokerage's multi-billion-dollar income stream, with the rest held by company insiders. However, this public slice continues to expand rapidly as the company captures global market share and increases the variety of tradeable assets available to its users.

Financially, the company operates with an incredibly clean profile, maintaining a 0.0x debt-to-equity ratio that signals zero long-term corporate debt burden on shareholder equity. While traditional brokerage cash flows frequently fluctuate due to shifting client payables and deposits, Interactive Brokers pairs its debt-free balance sheet with strict liquid capital reserves.

Risk profile comparison

Coinbase faces significant revenue concentration risk, with its financial performance closely tied to cryptocurrency prices and trading activity. The company is working to diversify its business, most notably through tokenized stocks that provide exposure to companies like Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA). However, these products are currently limited to eligible investors outside the U.S. Despite these expansion efforts, Coinbase's dependence on crypto market cycles remains its biggest risk for investors.

Interactive Brokers is highly dependent on market-driven trading volumes, which can fluctuate unpredictably and impact profitability. It faces intense competition from other prime brokers and traditional exchanges like CME Group (NASDAQ:CME). Additionally, the company relies heavily on its proprietary technology, meaning software failures or international regulatory shifts could disrupt its global operations or increase compliance costs significantly.

Valuation comparison

Interactive Brokers appears more attractively priced on an earnings basis, while Coinbase trades at a lower multiple of its trailing sales.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Both Coinbase and Interactive Brokers offer compelling opportunities for long-term investors, but their valuations and growth prospects tell two different stories.

Coinbase is the more expensive stock based on earnings, trading at 57.1 times expected profits compared to Interactive Brokers at 30.1 times. However, the picture reverses when looking at revenue, with Coinbase trading at 7.1 times annual sales versus 12.3 times for Interactive Brokers.

That difference is worth considering, but Interactive Brokers has the stronger argument. Its revenue grew nearly 20% in 2025, roughly twice the pace of Coinbase.

Coinbase certainly has greater exposure to the growth potential of cryptocurrency adoption. However, investors are paying a premium for that potential, and much of the company's financial performance remains tied to unpredictable crypto market cycles.

For long-term investors, Interactive Brokers looks like the better buy. Its combination of faster recent revenue growth, financial strength, and a more diversified business model offers a compelling balance of growth and risk.

Coinbase could outperform during another crypto bull market, but Interactive Brokers offers a clearer path to sustained growth without relying so heavily on the performance of a single asset class.

Brent's $115 front month sits $4.6 above January — the $14 spread to WTI is the supply-risk premiumDecember Brent trades at $115.29 while January is $110.71, a $4.58 backwardation. The December Brent-WTI spread is $14.2, versus a $3-5 normal. That gap, not the headline, is where the Middle East supply risk is priced. Here is what the curve says, why the December contract's expiry on October 30 will mechanically cut the headline by $4.6, and the 108.81 neckline that decides the next move.
