Bitcoin's exponential gains over the past decade have convinced some investors that it still has millionaire-maker potential.
In order to turn $1,000 into $1 million, Bitcoin would need to have 1,000x upside potential.
While Bitcoin has delivered 1,000x gains in the past, those same types of gains are highly unlikely going forward.
Since its launch back in 2009, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) has gained an absolutely incredible 134,900,000%. For good reason, it has acquired a reputation as a potential millionaire maker.
But that was then. The days of Bitcoin's stratospheric annual returns may be coming to an end. As institutional investors pile into Bitcoin, it is increasingly behaving like a high-beta tech stock. Thus, it's going to be a lot harder to turn $1,000 into $1 million.

The math behind any potential millionaire-maker coin is relatively simple, at least when the contemplated investment is small. The only way to turn $1,000 into $1 million is if the coin has 1,000x upside potential.
At one time, Bitcoin had this type of upside potential. It's how the cryptocurrency went from a $1 price tag to a $1,000 value, and from $100 to $100,000.

But is that still the case? From a current price of $85,000, Bitcoin would need to skyrocket to $85 million. That's preposterous, and well beyond the price target of even the most bullish Bitcoin investor. Take Michael Saylor of Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), for example. He thinks Bitcoin is headed to $21 million in 21 years.
Just think of the math involved if Bitcoin were to hit a price of $85 million. Right now, Bitcoin has a market cap of $1.7 trillion. So 1,000x upside implies a future market cap measured in the quadrillions, not the trillions. That simply does not make any kind of sense.
Or, think of it another way. Bitcoin at a price of $85 million would be worth nearly 1,000 times the current value of Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX). Right now, SpaceX has a market cap of $2.2 trillion.
That being said, it is possible to think of a few alternative paths to millionaire status. For example, investors could dabble in Bitcoin derivatives (such as perpetual futures) or Bitcoin prediction market contracts.
In both cases, investors can take on tremendous leverage, setting up the opportunity for massive gains (as well as crushing losses). On Kalshi, for example, retail investors can take on 6.8x leverage when trading Bitcoin perpetual futures.
So, in this hypothetical scenario, an investor might be able to transform $1,000 into $10,000 using leverage. Then, that money could be plowed into the spot crypto market. In this scenario, Bitcoin would only need 100x upside potential. That's still asking a lot of Bitcoin, but at least the numbers start to make at least a little more sense.
Long story short, the most likely path to millionaire status is by spotting the potential of a cryptocurrency investment early, long before anyone else thinks it's valuable.
That was the case with Bitcoin in the early days, when nobody could imagine it even reaching $10, $100, or $1,000. Now it's worth $85,000.
