Choosing between Coupang (NYSE:CPNG) and MercadoLibre (NASDAQ:MELI) means weighing South Korea's logistics king against Latin America's fintech and retail giant to see which offers better value for everyday investors.

Both companies dominate their respective regions through integrated ecosystems that provide commerce, payments, and delivery. While Coupang focuses on extreme density and speed in South Korea and Taiwan, MercadoLibre operates across 18 countries, leveraging its fintech arm to capture unbanked populations. This comparison examines their performance to determine the better buy today.

The case for Coupang

Coupang operates as a dominant force in South Korean e-commerce, offering retail, restaurant delivery, and video streaming. The company serves roughly 24.7 million active customers through brands like Eats and Play, operating within the retail stocks category. It also recently acquired luxury platform Farfetch to broaden its presence in high-end specialty retail across more than 190 countries, utilizing infrastructure from Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) to support its technology needs.

In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, Coupang reported revenue of nearly $34.5 billion, representing a growth rate of approximately 14.1% over the prior year. The company generated net income of $208.0 million, resulting in a net margin of roughly 0.6%. This performance shows steady progress compared to FY 2024, as the company scales its infrastructure and handles higher order volumes across its Rocket Delivery network.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the current ratio is nearly 1.0x, which measures a company's ability to cover short-term liabilities with short-term assets. The debt-to-equity ratio is 1.0x, indicating that total debt equals shareholders' equity. For the fiscal year, free cash flow was approximately $522.0 million. Note that stock-based compensation accounted for roughly 26.8% of operating cash flow, inflating reported cash generation, since SBC is a non-cash expense added back to cash flow.

The case for MercadoLibre

MercadoLibre functions as the primary e-commerce and fintech ecosystem in Latin America through its Mercado Libre and Mercado Pago platforms. The business connects nearly 89 million unique active buyers across 18 countries, providing essential services like logistics through Mercado Envios. It relies on global cloud providers, primarily Amazon and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), to manage its massive digital transactions and marketplace operations across the region.

In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, MercadoLibre reported revenue of nearly $28.9 billion, a significant 39.1% increase over the previous year. The company reported net income of approximately $2.0 billion, yielding a net margin of 6.9%. This rapid growth reflects increasing adoption of digital payments and online shopping across its core markets in Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina.

As of the December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is 1.7x, meaning total debt is 1.7 times shareholder equity. The current ratio is roughly 1.2x, suggesting the company has sufficient short-term assets to meet its immediate obligations. Free cash flow for the year reached a robust $10.8 billion, demonstrating the company's ability to generate cash while aggressively investing in its logistics and credit products.

Risk profile comparison

Coupang faces intense competition from new entrants in the e-commerce sector and strict fair trade regulations in Korea. The company is currently managing risks from a November 2025 data incident that led to ongoing litigation and potential criminal sanctions. Furthermore, the integration of Farfetch introduces potential impairment costs, while the dual-class stock structure concentrates voting power with Bom Kim, limiting the influence of other shareholders.

MercadoLibre operates in volatile emerging markets where currency devaluation and economic instability are frequent challenges. The fintech division, Mercado Pago, faces intense competition from both traditional banks and global fintech players like Alphabet. Additionally, the company relies heavily on third-party mobile platforms like the App Store from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) for distribution, which exposes it to restrictive terms and evolving data privacy regulations.

Valuation comparison

Coupang offers a significantly lower sales multiple to investors, though MercadoLibre trades at a comparable premium based on future earnings estimates.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

When comparing Coupang and MercadoLibre, investors should consider a few key factors. Let's have a look at them and see what that tells us about each stock.

To start, there's growth. While both companies have delivered robust growth, MercadoLibre is the clear winner in this category. The company has averaged an astounding average of 44% year-over-year revenue growth since 2021. In its most recent quarter, MercadoLibre reported nearly 50% growth, demonstrating that its growth remains red-hot. Coupang, on the other hand, has averaged 17% year-over-year revenue growth. While still impressive, the company's growth has decelerated in recent quarters, falling below 4% in its most recent report.

Another factor to consider is each company's profitability. Again, MercadoLibre comes out on top. The company has averaged an operating margin of 11% over the last five years. Coupang, by contrast, has delivered an average operating margin of -0.4%. Indeed, after several years of modest but consistent profitability, the company recently saw its operating margin slip into the red.

Last, there's the customer base. Since both stocks are e-commerce companies, the size, geographic footprint, and composition of their customer bases are incredibly important to consider. MercadoLibre boasts around 120 million e-commerce buyers and around 88 million fintech users, giving it a wide and diverse customer base spread across much of Latin and South America. Coupang, meanwhile, has around 24 million commerce customers, with the vast majority based in South Korea.

In summary, both stocks have delivered solid growth, but MercadoLibre has an edge in growth, profitability, and its customer scale. Therefore, for me, MercadoLibre is the clear winner in this head-to-head matchup.
