As of December 2025, the average benefit for people aged 65 is $1,607.27 per month, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). This age is a popular option because it's when you're eligible for Medicare, but it's no longer the age at which you receive a full Social Security check. For everyone born in 1960 or later, full retirement age (FRA) is 67.

If your full retirement age is 67, claiming at 65 means a permanent 13.33% reduction in your monthly payment. You're essentially choosing to receive checks two years before reaching your baseline.

The data shows a clear difference by gender at this age. The average benefit for men is $1,772.00 per month, while the average for women is $1,457.40, a gap of $314.60. These figures provide a snapshot of current beneficiaries and depend heavily on individual work histories and prior claiming decisions.

A 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) took effect in 2026. For a 65-year-old receiving the average benefit, that increase adds about $45 per month to the December 2025 amount. These adjustments are designed to help your benefits keep pace with inflation, though they don't always cover every rising cost.

How the Social Security Administration calculates your monthly benefit

The SSA calculates your benefit based on an average of your inflation-adjusted monthly wages across your 35 highest-earning years. That total is run through the primary insurance amount (PIA) formula. If you haven't worked at least 35 years, the SSA uses zeros in the calculation, which drags down your monthly average.

Social Security was designed to replace about 40% of your pre-retirement income. Because that share is well short of what most retirees need to cover their living expenses, you'll likely need to rely on savings or other income sources. Your specific benefit will depend on how your own earnings record compares to these national averages.

Is claiming Social Security at 65 right for you?

There are pros and cons to claiming Social Security at 65, and it helps to weigh both before deciding whether you want to apply then. One upside to signing up early is that you don't have to pay your Medicare Part B premiums out of pocket because the Social Security Administration automatically takes them from your checks. That's one less bill to think about.

You also get more years of benefits. This is advantageous if you have a short life expectancy or if you're unable to work and need help paying your bills. For some, claiming early might also give them the extra monthly income they'd need to finally retire.

Waiting until FRA to apply for checks means you have to cover your own expenses for longer, and you'll need to pay your Medicare Part B premiums as a separate bill each month. But every month you wait to apply will slowly increase your checks, and this doesn't stop at age 67. You can continue waiting until you qualify for your maximum benefit at 70.

It's worth exploring all these options before deciding which claiming age is right for you. For more on how Social Security affects your retirement, see this guide.
