TradingKey - On the Eve of Nvidia's Stock Hitting All-Time Highs, Cathie Wood's ARK Substantially Increases Its Stake: What Is She Betting On?

On August 17 Eastern Time, Nvidia (NVDA) stock continued to push higher, briefly rising to $227.87 during intraday trading, less than 4% away from its all-time high of $236.27. Subsequently, Nvidia's stock pulled back from its high to close down 0.07% at $225.01, and fell further in overnight trading.

As Nvidia's stock price sprinted toward its all-time high, ARK Invest, steered by Cathie Wood—known as the "Tech Stock Goddess"—moved to substantially increase its holdings rather than trim them. According to daily trade disclosures from ARK Invest, the firm spent over $22 million on August 17 alone to buy 100,000 shares of Nvidia.

Since the beginning of August, Cathie Wood has executed three buying actions to add Nvidia stock across multiple ETFs under her management in just half a month, accumulating over 270,000 shares worth more than $60 million, as detailed below:

Cathie Wood's pivot back to heavily overweighting Nvidia reflects a major reassessment by growth funds regarding the structural shift in the AI value chain. Previously, ARK favored end applications and AI software stocks. However, recent portfolio rebalancing indicates that the market sees immense certainty in Nvidia's $500 billion AI infrastructure financing and deployment. Before profits explode on the AI application side, computing power and high-end chips remain the safest transitional haven and earnings pillar within tech giants' capital expenditures.

In addition, while the market previously worried about supply chain bottlenecks or market share diversion to competitors, the smooth integration of advanced packaging and next-generation chip capacity means Nvidia's monopolistic moat of 80%–90% in the AI compute market remains irreplaceable in the short term. This has prompted ARK to acknowledge its previous stance and re-elevate Nvidia's weight in its portfolio.

Another factor that cannot be overlooked is pre-earnings positioning and the resurgence of risk appetite. On August 26, Nvidia will report earnings after the market close. Cathie Wood's aggressive buying ahead of the event signals strong bullish positioning, demonstrating her view that market fears of weakening AI demand or customer balance sheet risks are an overreaction, and her firm belief that the fundamentals of compute demand remain extremely strong.
