Will July CPI Reset the Fed, Bitcoin, and Every Major Market?

One number lands Wednesday morning, and Wall Street cannot agree on what comes next. The July CPI (consumer price index) will hit markets with September Federal Reserve (Fed) rate odds split down the middle.

A soft print could lift stocks, bonds, and crypto together. A hot one could corner the new Fed chair and revive rate-hike bets.

Why the July CPI Report Is a Coin-Flip Moment for the Fed

CME FedWatch data shows a 50.1% chance the Fed holds in September and a 49.9% chance it hikes. That is as close to a dead heat as markets get. One week ago, hike bets stood near 58%.

Forecasters expect a mild report. A Wall Street Journal survey of 15 banks puts July headline inflation at 0.12%, or 3.4% year over year. The core measure, which strips out food and energy, is seen at 0.22%.

That core figure is the real test. Monthly readings at or near 0.2% fit a path back to the Fed’s 2% goal. Anything higher does not.

The stakes jumped after the July jobs report showed the economy shed 23,000 jobs. Still, not every desk expects tighter policy. Wells Fargo’s chief economist sees the Fed holding rates through 2026.

Goldilocks Trade or Stagflation Trade

HSBC expects a second straight soft print, after June’s headline prices fell 0.42%. In that case, the bank sees yields falling and hike bets fading. Risk assets would get their Goldilocks backdrop back.

A firm number flips the script. Core inflation on the Fed’s preferred gauge hit 3.3% in June, up from 2.8% a year earlier. Meanwhile, 30-year Treasury yields already sit near their highest since 2007.

“This week answers one question: is the US economy cracking, or just cooling?” Nic Puckrin stated, warning that hot data feeds the stagflation trade.

Oil is the wildcard. Crude climbed Tuesday as US-Iran talks over the Strait of Hormuz stalled, pushing the 10-year Treasury yield to 4.699%. It then slid below $88 on reports of progress in Oman-Iran negotiations.

Crypto is already trading the tension. Bitcoin (BTC) changed hands near $64,302 on Tuesday, up 0.8% in 24 hours, per BeInCrypto Markets data.

Kevin Warsh’s Tough Talk Is Now on the Line

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh made lowering inflation his signature promise. Yet his July press conference left investors unsure he would act. Long-dated yields rose while he spoke.

His committee is restless. Three Fed officials dissented in favor of a hike last month. At least six voters have signaled they could back tightening if inflation stays firm. President Trump, who appointed Warsh, has meanwhile pushed for lower rates.

The calendar squeezes him too. The Fed’s next meeting after September falls days before the midterm elections. A pass in September could push any first hike all the way to December.

A mild reading buys Warsh room to set the agenda at Jackson Hole later this month. A firm one forces a choice. Hike, or watch the doubts grow. Wednesday’s number decides which story markets wake up to.
