Experts agree: US-Japan intervention to boost Yen won't last long

  • GBP/JPY bounces back to near 212.25 on expectations that Yen could resume the decline.
  • Experts believe that US-Japan intervention could not alter fundamental issues in Yen’s weakness.
  • The BoE is unlikely to raise interest rates in the near term.

The British Pound (GBP) claws back its early losses against the Japanese Yen (JPY) and edges higher to near 212.25 during the European trading session on Wednesday. The GBP/JPY pair bounces back as the Yen struggles to hold the recent recovery, with financial markets worrying that the United States (US)-Japan intervention-driven support would be short-lived.

Strategists at BNY Mellon argue that recent “coordinated intervention has bought time but hasn’t materially increased foreign JPY holdings.” They note that “investors remain net long JPY, but exposure is well below H1 2026 levels and won’t rebuild without credible domestic follow-through: Bank of Japan (BOJ) tightening, fiscal consolidation and structural reform.” In their view, Japanese risk assets are unevenly supported, with “Japanese equities remain largely passive and under-supported, while Japanese government bonds (JGBs) are attracting the clearest marginal demand.”

Analysts at Societe Generale have said that the key to a sustained recovery in the Yen lies in the macro backdrop rather than policy theatrics. They “still think that what will trigger a durable yen rally will be a rise in consensus forecasts of Japanese growth, rather than more, bigger intervention, coordinated or otherwise,” and caution that policy tightening alone is unlikely to deliver lasting support. In their view, “more, or faster BoJ rate hikes won’t solve the problem either, unless the Japanese growth outlook makes them appear realistic.”

According to TD Securities, the latest bout of official support for the Yen is best understood as a stopgap. Experts argue that “the latest JPY intervention episode” reflects the Japanese authorities “buying time in the FX market for fiscal policy to fundamentally induce global demand for JPY-based assets.” However, they caution that the underlying rate backdrop still argues against a sustained reversal in US Dollar-Yen. TD Securities contends that “unless the BoJ delivers a series of hikes in a swift manner (possibly every quarter) to 2%, we believe the trend is for USDJPY to resume its uptrend,” pointing to the fact that “1y1y OIS for Japan is 1.9% vs US at 4.1%, a 2.2% differential.”

Meanwhile, the British currency trades slightly higher than its peers after a continued underperformance in the past few trading days.

Pound Sterling Price This week

The table below shows the percentage change of British Pound (GBP) against listed major currencies this week. British Pound was the weakest against the Japanese Yen.

USD EUR GBP JPY CAD AUD NZD CHF
USD 0.05% 0.23% 0.28% 0.43% -0.11% 0.50% 0.17%
EUR -0.05% 0.18% 0.25% 0.39% -0.06% 0.45% 0.13%
GBP -0.23% -0.18% -0.28% 0.21% -0.24% 0.27% -0.06%
JPY -0.28% -0.25% 0.28% 0.22% -0.25% 0.33% -0.01%
CAD -0.43% -0.39% -0.21% -0.22% -0.45% 0.11% -0.26%
AUD 0.11% 0.06% 0.24% 0.25% 0.45% 0.50% 0.17%
NZD -0.50% -0.45% -0.27% -0.33% -0.11% -0.50% -0.33%
CHF -0.17% -0.13% 0.06% 0.01% 0.26% -0.17% 0.33%

The heat map shows percentage changes of major currencies against each other. The base currency is picked from the left column, while the quote currency is picked from the top row. For example, if you pick the British Pound from the left column and move along the horizontal line to the US Dollar, the percentage change displayed in the box will represent GBP (base)/USD (quote).

The Pound Sterling underperformed lately as traders reconsider Bank of England (BoE) interest rate expectations after the monetary policy announcement last week, in which Governor Andrew Bailey wanted to make sure that the public should not get the impression of the central bank edging towards an interest rate hike in the near term.

“Please do not leave this room thinking that the Bank of England is edging towards a hike, because frankly, there’s nothing in what I said, and I think any of us have said, along those lines,” Reuters reported.

Pound sentiment softens as BoE tone undercuts hawkish vote

Strategists at Rabobank highlight that speculative positioning has turned more negative on the UK currency, with "GBP net shorts bounced higher last week ahead of the BoE policy meeting." They note that, while the MPC delivered "a more hawkish voting split than the market had expected," Governor Bailey’s communication was notably cautious. His "dovish" tone is seen as "suggesting little support for the pound from the BoE," reinforcing the view that policy rhetoric is failing to provide a meaningful backstop for the Pound despite the ostensibly tighter stance implied by the vote.

Japanese Yen FAQs

The Japanese Yen (JPY) is one of the world’s most traded currencies. Its value is broadly determined by the performance of the Japanese economy, but more specifically by the Bank of Japan’s policy, the differential between Japanese and US bond yields, or risk sentiment among traders, among other factors.

One of the Bank of Japan’s mandates is currency control, so its moves are key for the Yen. The BoJ has directly intervened in currency markets sometimes, generally to lower the value of the Yen, although it refrains from doing it often due to political concerns of its main trading partners. The BoJ ultra-loose monetary policy between 2013 and 2024 caused the Yen to depreciate against its main currency peers due to an increasing policy divergence between the Bank of Japan and other main central banks. More recently, the gradually unwinding of this ultra-loose policy has given some support to the Yen.

Over the last decade, the BoJ’s stance of sticking to ultra-loose monetary policy has led to a widening policy divergence with other central banks, particularly with the US Federal Reserve. This supported a widening of the differential between the 10-year US and Japanese bonds, which favored the US Dollar against the Japanese Yen. The BoJ decision in 2024 to gradually abandon the ultra-loose policy, coupled with interest-rate cuts in other major central banks, is narrowing this differential.

The Japanese Yen is often seen as a safe-haven investment. This means that in times of market stress, investors are more likely to put their money in the Japanese currency due to its supposed reliability and stability. Turbulent times are likely to strengthen the Yen’s value against other currencies seen as more risky to invest in.
