On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, CMS Energy (NYSE:CMS) reaffirmed its full-year adjusted earnings per share guidance of $3.83 to $3.90. Operational reinvestments de-risk future earnings for long-term investors. Three things management said stand out.

1. Asset Restructuring Shifts Capital to Regulated Utility Operations

CMS Energy is selling non-utility renewable assets at NorthStar Clean Energy, its non-utility business segment, to exit non-regulated renewable development. Reallocating capital away from parent debt funding improves overall earnings quality and increases focus on core utility investments.

This restructuring strengthens our balance sheet and allows us to reduce over $500 million of funding within our current 5-year plan for use at the utility.
-- Garrick J. Rochow, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Financial Compensation Mechanisms Drive Capital-Light Clean Energy Growth

The updated integrated resource plan, a long-term utility strategy for energy supply, calls for $27 billion in clean energy investment. Power purchase agreements, contracts to buy electricity from third-party developers, allow the utility to earn fee income through a financial compensation mechanism.

The IRP assumes a financial compensation mechanism or FCM of $125 million beginning in 2031, growing to $195 million by 2040. Assuming a 50% ownership split.
-- Garrick J. Rochow, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Manufacturing and Semiconductor Expansion Drives Steady Electric Load

Industrial demand in Michigan is fueling consistent 2% to 3% annual electric sales growth. Contracting load with semiconductor and manufacturing customers spreads fixed system costs over a broader customer base without relying on speculative data center deals.

As noted on the slide, we have added approximately 745 megawatts of new contracts in our service territory, and we have energized more than half of that load or 450 megawatts.
-- Garrick J. Rochow, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Regulatory clarity in Michigan and expanding industrial demand keep earnings momentum on track. A pure-play regulated focus and capital-light compensation mechanisms position the utility to deliver steady growth while management watches rate case proceedings.

We remain well positioned to deliver toward the high end of our guidance range, while maintaining the flexibility to manage the remainder of the year and continue investing for the long term.
-- Srikanth Maddipati, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Consistency remains the core engine of shareholder value as the utility reinvests operational gains to safeguard system reliability.

I am confident in the strategy we are executing to deliver on our objectives this year and strengthen the plan going forward.
-- Srikanth Maddipati, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
