Key Points

  • Network optimization targets $2 billion in cumulative savings by 2027.

  • International export shipping volume increased 8% year over year.

On its calendar third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 28, 2026, FedEx (NYSE:FDX) raised its full-year adjusted earnings per share (EPS) guidance range to $18 to $18.60 per share. The move reflects expanding operating margins from network integration and pricing discipline. Long-term investors can see cost reductions translating directly into higher cash generation. Three things management said stand out.

1. Network Optimization Delivers Structural Cost Savings

The company is merging Express and Ground networks into one unified system, called Network 2.0, to eliminate duplicate routes and facilities. Management has already closed 260 stations while boosting volume density across remaining hubs.

We continue to expect Network 2.0 progress to translate to nearly $1 billion of Network 2.0 and associated One FedEx savings by the end of this calendar year and a cumulative $2 billion by the end of 2027.
-- Rajesh Subramaniam, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Share Repurchases Accelerate as Free Cash Flow Expands

Capital discipline is freeing up cash for direct shareholder returns. FedEx generates substantial adjusted free cash flow, which is total cash flow minus capital expenditures, allowing management to reduce total share count without sacrificing network investments.

Since June, we repurchased $2 billion of FedEx stock. We have an additional $4.3 billion in buyback authorization from the Board of Directors and plan to continue to repurchase stock opportunistically.
-- Claude Russ, Enterprise Vice President and Interim Chief Financial Officer

3. Strategic Pivot Focuses Operations on Higher-Yielding B2B Cargo

Management is intentionally shedding low-margin domestic shipments to prioritize business-to-business (B2B) services and high-value international trade. Shifting focus away from low-yielding packages boosts average revenue per shipment.

For the third consecutive quarter, international export volume increased, growing 8% year-over-year. Separately, international domestic volume declined 11%, part of what one executive called the firm's "deliberate strategy to focus on higher-yielding cross-border volumes."

Looking Ahead

International operations are expanding profit margins as structural changes take hold across European routes. And management isn't hiding its satisfaction with how commercial execution is playing out. On the competitive side, global network scale, proprietary tracking technologies, and deep customer integration all provide enduring operational advantages. Executives are also staying focused on pricing discipline and service quality to drive long-term cash flow.

We do expect international yield growth to moderate in 2027 as we lap this mix shift. Additionally, we are winning share in the global airfreight market based on service and our unique end-to-end solutions while growing yield.
-- Brie Carere, Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer

Sustaining the balance between network efficiency and high-margin B2B traffic underpins the broader enterprise strategy. And management continues to direct capital toward high-return initiatives while executing structural cost reductions to support future cash generation.

The momentum we have established positions us well to deliver for our customers, create value for our stockholders and generate significant free cash flow both this year and beyond.
-- Rajesh Subramaniam, President and Chief Executive Officer

Anthropic files for a $2 trillion IPO — the $80.7 billion loss is the decoy, the $450 billion compute bill is the riskAnthropic publicly filed its S-1 on October 26, revealing $16.29 billion of first-half revenue (+1,304% year over year) and a $80.7 billion net loss — of which $72.4 billion is a non-cash convertible-note charge. The real number is the $450 billion of signed, mostly non-cancelable compute commitments. Brent's $115 front month sits $4.6 above January — the $14 spread to WTI is the supply-risk premiumDecember Brent trades at $115.29 while January is $110.71, a $4.58 backwardation. The December Brent-WTI spread is $14.2, versus a $3-5 normal. That gap, not the headline, is where the Middle East supply risk is priced. Here is what the curve says, why the December contract's expiry on October 30 will mechanically cut the headline by $4.6, and the 108.81 neckline that decides the next move.
