Caledonia Mining combines record revenue growth with operational efficiency at its core Zimbabwean assets.
The company faces significant jurisdictional and regulatory risks that complicate long-term operational stability.
Heavy capital spending on the Bilboes project is essential for growth but strains near-term margins.
When gold prices hit record levels, miners often struggle to turn that windfall into lasting profit. Caledonia Mining (NYSE: CMCL) takes a different approach. By focusing its operations on the Blanket Mine in Zimbabwe, it has built a business that extracts value through operational rigor rather than pure luck. The company, which is a gold producer that also develops mineral properties, currently trades at $20.25 as of October 30. While the stock has faced a 28% decline over the past year, this drop obscures a period of record revenue growth.

Caledonia enters 2027 with a stumble to explain and a transformation to execute. In October, the company cut Blanket's full-year production guidance to 69,000 to 72,500 ounces after third-quarter output fell 11%, blaming delayed compressor deliveries that starved the mine's deepest, highest-grade levels of compressed air. Cost guidance rose in tandem, with all-in sustaining costs now expected at $2,650 to $2,850 per ounce.
That said, there are reasons to be bullish. Two of the four new compressors are already running, the rest are en route, and roughly 1,100 ounces temporarily retained in the plant should be recovered from mid-October. Deep-level drilling keeps confirming the continuity of Blanket's orebodies, and management expects 2027 production to exceed the old guidance range.
The five-year story runs through Bilboes. The feasibility study landed in November 2025, with a $150 million convertible note funding the early work in January, and $43 million of growth capital still flowing into the project this year despite the guidance cut, which management says doesn't impair its ability to fund Bilboes from internal cash flow. Risk around Zimbabwe is why the stock trades below 8 times trailing earnings, and that discount won't fully close. But if the compressors restore Blanket's rhythm and the Bilboes financing comes together, I think Caledonia could deliver market-beating returns over the next five years, with dividends paid along the way.
