For many seniors, there's no single income stream that's as valuable as Social Security. And that's what makes the program's annual cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs, so important.

Back in the day, Congress had to vote to give Social Security benefits an inflation boost. These days, benefits are automatically eligible for an annual inflation adjustment.

In 2026, Social Security benefits received a 2.8% COLA -- a raise many seniors found insufficient. In 2027, benefits are getting a much more generous 3.6% COLA.

That may seem like positive news. Here's why it really isn't.

A larger COLA won't help you get ahead

Many people think that larger Social Security COLAs are better than smaller ones. And it's easy to see why that line of thinking might apply.

But one important thing to realize is that the purpose of Social Security COLAs is to increase benefits enough to keep pace with inflation. So when your checks go up 3.6% in 2027, you're not getting a raise per se. Rather, you're effectively getting a catch-up for the higher costs you grappled with this year -- only instead of having that money arrive on the spot, it's arriving later.

To put it another way, anytime there's a large Social Security COLA, it comes at the expense of rampant inflation. The reason 2027's increase is 3.6% is that costs have been surging since the Middle East conflict erupted earlier in the year.

As such, the best you can expect out of a 3.6% COLA is that it will help you stop falling behind as far as inflation goes. But if inflation picks up in the new year, even a boost as generous as 3.6% may be rendered fairly useless.

Take steps to improve your finances in the new year

You may be banking on your upcoming Social Security COLA to improve your financial picture. But that COLA probably won't make a huge difference in your situation, especially if you're struggling a lot now.

Rather than rely on a COLA to get to a better place financially, take matters into your own hands. Start working part-time if you need more breathing room to cover your bills, and do a thorough spending audit to see where you can reduce some expenses.

If you own a home, downsizing could be worth considering, too, especially if you're able to pocket some equity. Plus, a smaller space could mean lower costs, which might help you stretch your Social Security checks further.

There may be other creative steps you can take to drum up income, too, like renting out a parking spot in your driveway. The key is to recognize what the upcoming COLA will and won't do for your finances so you're able to improve them.
