As delivery networks expand globally, investors often weigh domestic leaders against international powerhouses. Choosing between DoorDash Inc. (NASDAQ:DASH) and MercadoLibre Inc. (NASDAQ:MELI) requires understanding local commerce versus regional e-commerce dominance.

DoorDash dominates the U.S. food and grocery delivery landscape by connecting merchants with a vast courier network and proprietary commerce tools. MercadoLibre operates a massive e-commerce and fintech ecosystem across Latin America, serving millions of active users. Both companies are compared because they represent high-growth platforms leveraging logistics and digital payments to capture shifting consumer spending habits in their respective regions.

The case for DoorDash

DoorDash operates a local commerce platform connecting consumers, merchants, and couriers through a delivery and pickup network. The company serves various categories among retail stocks including grocery, pet, and convenience stores across more than 40 countries. It utilizes social-first marketing campaigns through its partnership with the agency Get Engaged and reported over 35 million members across its DashPass and Wolt+ subscription services at the end of 2025.

In FY 2025, revenue reached about $13.7 billion, which was a growth of approximately 27.9% compared to the previous year. This revenue expansion supported a net income of roughly $935 million for the period, indicating a stronger bottom line. The result represents a substantial improvement from the net income of $123 million reported in FY 2024.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is approximately 0.3x, which measures total debt relative to shareholders' equity. The current ratio is nearly 1.4x, while free cash flow, defined as cash from operations minus capital expenditures, reached roughly $2.2 billion. Note that stock-based compensation accounted for roughly 43.2% of operating cash flow, inflating reported cash generation because stock-based compensation is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

The case for MercadoLibre

MercadoLibre operates a vast digital ecosystem that integrates e-commerce marketplace services with the Mercado Pago fintech platform. The company serves a diverse range of 131 million unique buyers and small businesses across 18 countries in Latin America, including Brazil and Mexico. This model positions it uniquely by combining retail, logistics, and financial services in one integrated platform.

During FY 2025, revenue rose to about $28.9 billion, representing growth of approximately 39% over the prior year. The company generated net income of roughly $2.0 billion for the same period, which was an increase from the $1.9 billion earned in FY 2024. This performance resulted in a net margin of close to 6.9% for the fiscal year.

As of the December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is roughly 1.7x, which compares total debt against shareholder equity. The current ratio is approximately 1.2x, while free cash flow reached about $10.8 billion in FY 2025. Free cash flow is calculated by subtracting capital expenditures from cash generated by operating activities.

Risk profile comparison

DoorDash faces significant pressure from global and local delivery services like Delivery Hero (OTC:DLVHF) and Prosus (OTC:PROSF). The company also manages legal risks related to courier classification and $131.5 million in settlement costs arising from pay regulations. Operational risks include cybersecurity vulnerabilities, platform outages, and the complex task of managing rapid international expansion into new markets.

MercadoLibre operates in a highly competitive market against international players such as Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN). The business is exposed to financial risks from high inflation and currency volatility across various Latin American markets. Regulatory changes regarding privacy laws and potential tax reforms also create uncertainty for its fintech and e-commerce operations.

Valuation comparison

MercadoLibre appears to be the more attractively valued option as it trades at a lower multiple of both sales and future earnings estimates. A Forward P/E compares the share price to future earnings estimates for the next year. The P/S ratio measures the market value of the company relative to its sales over the past twelve months.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

MercadoLibre evolved from the 'eBay of Latin America' to something more akin to a combination of Amazon and PayPal Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL). In 2025, the company made large investments in its Brazilian logistics network, cut down the free-shipping threshold in Brazil in June, and nearly doubled its consumer loan book. This drove impressive growth for the company and investors, with an increasing focus on financial services over delivering goods.

Yet the immediate concern with left-of-center Luis Lula winning the Brazilian presidential election is that the new administration will start addressing Brazil's high government and consumer debt levels, which will keep interest rates there around their current very high levels. That's bad for a consumer-loan-focused business like MercadoLibre, and shares have been hammered this week as a result.

Long-term, however, such fears are probably overblown. In fact, in the current fiscal year, revenue is expected to jump 45% to $41.9 billion, with slightly higher free cash flow and slightly lower net income. Overall, it's a good picture for MercadoLibre.

Things look good for DoorDash, as well. Originally a prepared-food delivery service, DoorDash has been finding success by expanding into new business verticals, such as delivering electronics, apparel, and groceries. Groceries, in particular, are expected to grow twice as fast as meal delivery for the company in the coming years. International expansion, wth the acquisition of the U.K. based Deliveroo, is helping the company expand as well. Advances in efficiency and speed, and improvements that help customers build order carts in the app, are improving sales, too.

For the current fiscal year, 2026, revenue is expected to rise 30% to $17.8 billion, with net income improving about 20% to $1.13 billion.

The stocks of each of these businesses are priced as high-growth stocks, as shown by their high forward P/E ratios. The investment decision here is driven by the markets where their core customers are less likely to be affected by rising debt levels and lowering consumer confidence. Both face those issues, but the U.S. market that is core to DoorDash's business historically holds up better than Latin America when economic times get tough. In 2026, go with DoorDash.
