OpenAI Launches Affordable ChatGPT Go Subscription in India

On Tuesday, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Go, its most affordable AI subscription tier, targeting the price-sensitive Indian market.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, announced the launch via an X post, highlighting that users can pay through India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Priced at 399 rupees per month (approximately $4.60), ChatGPT Go offers Indian customers enhanced features, including 10 times the message limit, image generation, file uploads, and double the memory compared to the free version.

For context, OpenAI’s higher-tier plans include ChatGPT Plus at 1,999 rupees monthly and ChatGPT Pro at 19,900 rupees monthly. Competitors like Microsoft charge around 2,000 rupees monthly for CoPilot, while Google’s premium AI Ultra plan costs up to 24,500 rupees per month.

OpenAI’s Growing Focus on India as Key Market

OpenAI is accelerating its presence in India, with CEO Sam Altman identifying the country as its soon-to-be largest market by user volume. Earlier this year, Altman engaged with India’s IT minister and explored AI education initiatives.

Currently, India ranks as OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States. The company also recently rolled out its most advanced AI model, GPT-5, with the base version accessible in the free ChatGPT tier since August. This strategic push underscores OpenAI’s commitment to expanding AI accessibility and adoption in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.
