Micron Taiwan Employees Get Up to 68 Months of Pay: Will Strike Risk Ease as HBM Supply Draws Focus?

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - As AI servers continue to drive up DRAM demand, particularly for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), Micron Technology (MU) announced its FY2026 incentive plan for employees in Taiwan, China, but the company and the Taoyuan plant union failed to reach an agreement in the first round of labor mediation.

On September 11, Micron stated that the total compensation for direct production staff in Taiwan for FY2026 would be equivalent to 35 to 68 months of salary, covering roles such as operators, technicians, and shift engineers.

The Taoyuan plant union subsequently publicly rejected Micron's latest incentive plan, maintaining that the company has still failed to directly address demands for bonus system reform. As the two sides have yet to reach a consensus on an additional one-time bonus for FY2026 and a long-term profit-sharing mechanism starting from FY2027, the potential strike risk remains unresolved.

Micron Taiwan Employee Bonuses Reach Up to 68 Months of Pay

According to Reuters, the minimum cash compensation for direct production employees of Micron Technology in Taiwan for fiscal year 2026 is NT$1.7 million (approximately $53,800). Taiwan employees hired before August 29, 2025, will also receive a special cash bonus of NT$1 million, which is included in the total package.

The average total compensation for entry-level engineers is approximately NT$3.4 million, of which about NT$2.9 million is in cash, with the remainder in equity awards calculated based on grant value. Micron stated that this is the highest compensation level the company has ever offered to direct production employees in Taiwan; more than 60,000 employees globally will receive fiscal year 2026 awards.

The announcement of these awards comes amid significant profitability growth for Micron. In the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, the company reported revenue of $41.456 billion, GAAP net income of $28.243 billion, and a GAAP operating margin of 80.4%. Micron management stated that revenue, gross margin, and earnings per share for the quarter all set company records.

Union Previously Proposed Additional Bonus and Long-Term Profit-Sharing Plan

Micron has approximately 15,000 employees in Taiwan, with unions in Taoyuan and Taichung having a combined total of nearly 10,000 members. An internal online survey conducted in August 2026 showed that over 80% of participating members supported taking strike action. The survey reflected members' intentions and was not a formal strike vote.

The union's demands fall into two parts. For fiscal year 2026, the union is demanding that Micron pay an extra one-time bonus; based on estimates under the union's proposal, each Taiwan employee would receive a bonus equivalent to roughly 83 months of salary on average. Starting in fiscal year 2027, the union wants to replace the current incentive pay plan, allocating 15% of operating profit to employee bonuses and adjusting the payout frequency from annually to quarterly.

The union contends that corporate performance metrics and calculation methods in the current bonus system lack transparency and fail to fully reflect Micron's profitability. Profit-sharing arrangements already established by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix (SKHY) have also served as a basis of comparison for the union's reform demands.

In May 2026, Samsung Electronics averted a strike through labor negotiations that was originally planned to last 18 days and involve up to about 48,000 employees. Under the agreement, Samsung will allocate 10.5% of its chip division's operating profit to special bonuses paid to employees in stock, subject to meeting established profitability targets.

SK Hynix established the basic framework of its bonus system with the union in 2025, removing the previous bonus cap and allocating 10% of annual operating profit to employee performance incentives.

However, negotiations between the two sides regarding the 2026 pay raise and bonus payment structure have not yet concluded. After union members rejected the initial tentative agreement on August 25, management and labor reached a revised proposal on September 10, adjusting the default payout ratio for performance bonuses to 50% cash and 50% stock. The new plan remains subject to approval by member vote from September 15 to 16.

Will Strike Risks Ease?

On September 4, Micron Technology failed to reach an agreement after the first round of mediation with the union representing workers at its Taoyuan plant. The union demanded that Micron pay an additional one-time bonus for fiscal year 2026 and establish a long-term bonus mechanism tied to operating profit starting in fiscal year 2027, making the second round of mediation a critical point for assessing strike risks.

Micron subsequently announced a fiscal year 2026 compensation package for direct production employees in Taiwan, with a total compensation value equivalent to 35 to 68 months of salary. The Taoyuan plant union publicly rejected the package, arguing that the company failed to directly address demands for bonus system reforms, and stated that if the company provides no further response, it will continue to move toward a strike.

Under Article 54 of Taiwan's Act of Labor-Dispute Settlement, after labor dispute mediation fails, the union must also conduct a direct, secret ballot of all members and obtain majority approval before declaring a strike. The internal survey conducted in August merely reflected the intentions of participating members and was not a legally binding strike vote.

Whether strike risks can be mitigated depends on whether the two sides can make progress on the additional bonus for fiscal year 2026 and the profit-sharing mechanism starting in fiscal year 2027. If a consensus is reached in the second round of mediation, the dispute is expected to be resolved through negotiation; if mediation fails and enters the formal strike voting phase, market concerns over production disruptions may intensify.

As of September 11, 2026, no public information indicates any work stoppages at Micron's Taiwan facilities, nor are there reports of impacts on DRAM or HBM production or customer deliveries.

HBM4 Expansion Brings Increased Focus to Taiwan's Production Stability

Taiwan is an important DRAM manufacturing and advanced packaging base for Micron Technology. According to company disclosures, Micron's cumulative investment in the region has exceeded NT$1.6 trillion.

Micron stated during its June earnings call that its existing facility in Tongluo is expected to begin shipping products in volume starting in mid-2027, about a quarter ahead of its previous schedule. The company also confirmed that construction has begun on a second cleanroom of similar scale at the site, which will support EUV equipment in the future.

In its AI memory business, Micron began volume shipments of 36GB 12-high HBM4 in the first quarter of 2026, designed for the Nvidia Vera Rubin platform. The company stated that the production ramp speed of this HBM4 is roughly twice that of 12-high HBM3E, with related shipping revenue already exceeding $1 billion.

The outcome of the second round of mediation and whether the union initiates a formal strike vote are key inflection points for judging whether the labor dispute will escalate. If a formal voting phase is reached, market attention may shift to operations at Taiwan facilities, HBM4 capacity expansion, and customer deliveries. Even if a strike vote passes, it does not necessarily mean an immediate disruption to production.

For MU investors, close attention should be paid going forward to the second round of mediation, the formal strike vote, and plant operating conditions.
