New Zealand Dollar drifts higher above 0.5600, all eyes on US CPI inflation data

출처 Fxstreet
  • NZD/USD attracts some buyers to around 0.5625 in Wednesday’s early European session.
  • Fed’s Williams said one more US interest-rate hike may be appropriate.
  • China’s PPI climbed 5.0% YoY in September; CPI rose 0.9% YoY during the same period.

The NZD/USD pair rebounds from a 17-month low to near 0.5625 during the early European trading hours on Wednesday. The US dollar (USD) weakens against the New Zealand Dollar (NZD) amid easing US bond yields and dovish signals from New York Federal Reserve (Fed) President John Williams.

US bond yields fell on Tuesday following a sharp fall in oil prices. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell more than 2 basis points (bps) to 5.215%, while 30-year yields were down more than 3 bps at 5.564%. US 10-year and 30-year yields hit multi-decade highs over the last two weeks.

On Tuesday, Fed’s Williams said that it may be appropriate for the Fed to raise interest rates once more this year, but he left open the possibility of further boosts in 2027.

Traders will take more cues from the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation data for September, which will be released on Wednesday. Attention will shift to the US Producer Price Index (PPI) and Retail Sales reports on Thursday. Any signs of hotter inflation in the US could boost the Greenback and act as a headwind for the pair in the near term.

China's Producer Price Index (PPI) rose at its fastest pace in more than four years in September, while CPI inflation edged up, the National Bureau of Statistics of China showed on Wednesday. These reports could improve sentiment toward China-proxy Kiwi, as China is a major trading partner of New Zealand.

Williams leans dovish on 2027 rates but Fed tone stays firmly hawkish

Fed’s Williams delivered a notably softer message, with the FXS Speechtracker score at 3.4/10, well below the 5.8/10 historical average, signaling a more dovish tilt relative to the established baseline. The explicit view that there is no need for a rate hike in 2027, alongside confidence that inflation will slow “quite a bit” toward the 2% target next year, reinforces expectations for a prolonged pause and increases market conviction that the current tightening cycle is complete. For the Dollar, this combination of a lower speech score and disinflation optimism points to reduced upside from policy repricing, even if broader Fed communication remains cautious on inflation risks.

The FXS Fed Sentiment Index fell by 3.09 points to 133.86, indicating a meaningful pullback in perceived hawkishness following the speech. Despite this decline, the index remains well above the neutral 100 threshold, showing that overall Fed rhetoric is still in hawkish territory, even as Williams’ remarks mark a dovish adjustment compared to the established baseline captured by the FXS Speechtracker.

Chart Analysis NZD/USD

Technical Analysis: NZD/USD holds a bearish bias below the 100-day SMA

In the daily chart, NZD/USD remains under clear bearish pressure, holding below the 20-period Bollinger simple moving average (SMA) and the 100-period SMA, which both sit overhead as trend resistance. Price is also capped beneath the upper Bollinger band, keeping spot anchored near the lower half of the recent volatility envelope. The Relative Strength Index (14) at 38.7 stays below the neutral 50 line, hinting at persistent, though not extreme, downside momentum.

On the topside, initial resistance is located at the 20-period Bollinger SMA near 0.5645, followed by the upper Bollinger band at 0.5735, while the 100-period SMA at 0.5790 marks a stronger medium-term barrier that would need to be reclaimed to ease the bearish bias. On the downside, immediate support aligns with the lower Bollinger band around 0.5555; a decisive break beneath this floor would open the way for further losses, whereas holding above it could trigger some short-covering back toward the 0.5645 resistance area.

New Zealand Dollar FAQs

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD), also known as the Kiwi, is a well-known traded currency among investors. Its value is broadly determined by the health of the New Zealand economy and the country’s central bank policy. Still, there are some unique particularities that also can make NZD move. The performance of the Chinese economy tends to move the Kiwi because China is New Zealand’s biggest trading partner. Bad news for the Chinese economy likely means less New Zealand exports to the country, hitting the economy and thus its currency. Another factor moving NZD is dairy prices as the dairy industry is New Zealand’s main export. High dairy prices boost export income, contributing positively to the economy and thus to the NZD.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) aims to achieve and maintain an inflation rate between 1% and 3% over the medium term, with a focus to keep it near the 2% mid-point. To this end, the bank sets an appropriate level of interest rates. When inflation is too high, the RBNZ will increase interest rates to cool the economy, but the move will also make bond yields higher, increasing investors’ appeal to invest in the country and thus boosting NZD. On the contrary, lower interest rates tend to weaken NZD. The so-called rate differential, or how rates in New Zealand are or are expected to be compared to the ones set by the US Federal Reserve, can also play a key role in moving the NZD/USD pair.

Macroeconomic data releases in New Zealand are key to assess the state of the economy and can impact the New Zealand Dollar’s (NZD) valuation. A strong economy, based on high economic growth, low unemployment and high confidence is good for NZD. High economic growth attracts foreign investment and may encourage the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to increase interest rates, if this economic strength comes together with elevated inflation. Conversely, if economic data is weak, NZD is likely to depreciate.

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) tends to strengthen during risk-on periods, or when investors perceive that broader market risks are low and are optimistic about growth. This tends to lead to a more favorable outlook for commodities and so-called ‘commodity currencies’ such as the Kiwi. Conversely, NZD tends to weaken at times of market turbulence or economic uncertainty as investors tend to sell higher-risk assets and flee to the more-stable safe havens.
