Planet Fitness: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • Planet Fitness will raise regional Black Card prices in the second quarter of 2027.

  • Management plans to sell a portion of its corporate-owned clubs.

  • Planet Fitness acquired 25 clubs in Portugal for EUR 102.5 million.

  • Motley Fool Issues Rare "Total Conviction" Buy Alert ›

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Nov. 5, 2026, Planet Fitness (NYSE:PLNT) announced a shift toward a regional pricing strategy and plans to sell corporate-owned gyms to franchisees. The fitness chain is balancing lower-priced memberships with profitability to expand franchisee cash flow and buy back stock. Three things management said stand out.

1. Regional Pricing Increases Will Target Specific Markets

Testing showed that a blanket price drop did not boost total revenue across every market, so management is shifting to local pricing power. Customizing prices by region protects value while giving franchisees room to grow revenue.

Our tests have provided us valuable insights around our pricing strategy, and we now plan to introduce highly targeted regional Black Card price increases in the second quarter of 2027.
-- Colleen Keating, Chief Executive Officer

2. Selling Corporate Clubs Unlocks Cash for Share Buybacks

Planet Fitness is evaluating whether to sell a portion of its 280 corporate-owned clubs back to franchise operators. Refranchising these locations turns physical assets into liquid capital while keeping corporate locations lean enough to test new ideas.

Our plan is to sell a portion of the corporate club fleet to new or existing franchisees with the intention of using the proceeds from these transactions to support our capital allocation strategies.
-- Sudhanshu Priyadarshi, Chief Financial Officer and President, International

3. European Expansion Relies on Asset-Light Capital Recycling

Buying Be-Fit in Portugal gives the company 25 existing locations and 80,000 members across the Iberian Peninsula. Management intends to scale European operations through acquisitions, convert the locations to its brand, and eventually refranchise them to local operators.

The acquisition is expected to be accretive to earnings in 2027 and gives us a scaled profitable entry into a high-priority European market with natural operating and geographic synergy with our growing Spain business.
-- Sudhanshu Priyadarshi, Chief Financial Officer and President, International

Looking Ahead

Systemwide same-club sales grew 1.5% in the third quarter, prompting management to raise its full-year revenue growth outlook to 8%. High membership retention and stable royalty streams underpin cash generation while management monitors domestic real estate timelines.

We are a cash flow generative business, and we use that cash to create shareholder value in 3 ways: we invest in the business to support growth, we invest in new markets where we can build the position and recycle the capital, and we buy back shares when we see value.
-- Sudhanshu Priyadarshi, Chief Financial Officer and President, International

A new $500 million share buyback authorization reinforces capital return priorities as refranchising accelerates.

I am confident that the actions that we are taking today will position Planet Fitness to capture the significant growth opportunity we see ahead as more and more people around the globe make fitness and wellness an important part of their lifestyle.
-- Colleen Keating, Chief Executive Officer
