Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • Full year delivery guidance raised to 67,000 to 70,000 units.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, Rivian (NASDAQ:RIVN) announced that its R2, a midsize electric SUV, became its top-selling model by volume in the quarter. Scaling vehicle production lowers unit manufacturing costs and supports long-term profitability. Three takeaways from management explain the trajectory.

1. R2 Becomes Best-Selling Vehicle by Volume

R2 sales outstripped those of R1, the company's flagship vehicle, and EDV, its electric delivery van. Manufacturing expansion at its Illinois plant helps lower fixed costs per unit.

In fact, R2 is already our best-selling vehicle by volume, outselling both R1 and EDV in the third quarter.
-- R.J. Scaringe, Founder and Chief Executive Officer

2. Positive Automotive Margins Targeted for Year End

Management expects R2 production scale to drive a positive automotive gross margin (profit margin on vehicle sales) by the end of 2026. Higher production runs offset input inflation and launch expenses.

While new vehicle launch complexities in addition to rising costs of core components have, and we anticipate will continue to, impact our profitability, we expect that R2 will help us achieve a positive automotive gross margin exit rate for the year.
-- Derek Mulvey, Interim CFO

3. Autonomous Software Expansion Drives Market Share

Driver-assistance technology is a key customer purchase factor and a driver of software subscriber revenue. The planned rollout of Point to Point, a feature that enables hands-free navigation across city streets and highways, expands the software's functionality.

Looking Ahead

Vehicle delivery volumes and software service operations are accelerating across product lines. Direct hardware and software integration creates clear cost advantages, while management tracks core-component inflation and supply-chain execution.

We are laying the foundations for a future that we believe will be fully electric, autonomous and AI-defined.
-- R.J. Scaringe, Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Total available liquidity stands at approximately $13 billion when including targeted future capital commitments, funding ongoing technology investments and factory expansion in Georgia.

We remain confident that R2 and our technology road map will be truly transformative for the growth and profitability of our business.
-- Derek Mulvey, Vice President of Finance

The real number is the $450 billion of signed, mostly non-cancelable compute commitments. Here is what the filing says, why NVDA, ARM and MU are the tradeable read-through, and the conditions that decide whether the AI trade passes its first public valuation test.

Brent's $115 front month sits $4.6 above January — the $14 spread to WTI is the supply-risk premiumDecember Brent trades at $115.29 while January is $110.71, a $4.58 backwardation. The December Brent-WTI spread is $14.2, versus a $3-5 normal. That gap, not the headline, is where the Middle East supply risk is priced. Here is what the curve says, why the December contract's expiry on October 30 will mechanically cut the headline by $4.6, and the 108.81 neckline that decides the next move.
