As digital platforms reshape global consumption, investors often weigh high-margin services against capital-intensive retail. Deciding between Airbnb (NASDAQ:ABNB) and Coupang (NYSE:CPNG) requires balancing global reach against regional logistics dominance.

Airbnb connects hosts and travelers worldwide through a capital-light marketplace, while Coupang operates a massive end-to-end delivery network across South Korea and Taiwan. Both companies lead their respective niches but face vastly different operational hurdles. This comparison evaluates their growth, profitability, and risk profiles to help you determine which stock fits your strategy.

The case for Airbnb

Airbnb operates a global marketplace that connects more than 5.5 million hosts with travelers seeking unique accommodations and experiences. As detailed in its latest annual report, filed for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, the company utilizes a capital-light model that scales rapidly across 220 countries and regions. Recent initiatives like the Co-Host Network and redesigned service offerings aim to attract more inventory and enhance guest satisfaction.

In its 2025 fiscal year (FY), revenue reached $12.3 billion, representing growth of 10.8% over the prior year. The company reported net income of $2.5 billion, resulting in a net margin of 20.4%. This performance follows a period of high profitability in previous years, although the net margin slightly decreased from 23.9% in FY 2024.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was 0.3x, which indicates that the company uses a conservative amount of debt relative to its shareholder equity. Its current ratio of nearly 1.4x measures the company's ability to cover short-term liabilities with short-term assets. Free cash flow, calculated as cash flow from operations minus capital expenditures, reached $4.6 billion, though stock-based compensation (SBC) represented 34.3% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

The case for Coupang

Coupang is a dominant force in the South Korean e-commerce market, providing retail, restaurant delivery, and fintech services through its integrated logistics network. The company is a prominent name among retail stocks due to its WOW membership program and rapid delivery speeds. To broaden its reach, Coupang has expanded into Taiwan and recently acquired Farfetch to bolster its presence in the global luxury fashion market.

In FY 2025, revenue reached $34.5 billion, which is an increase of 14.1% compared to the previous year. The company reported net income of $208 million, resulting in a net margin of 0.6%. Despite the double-digit revenue growth rate, the thin net margin reflects the high costs associated with maintaining its extensive physical delivery infrastructure.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was 1.0x, showing a balanced mix of debt and equity financing. The current ratio stands at 1.0x, suggesting the company has just enough short-term assets to cover its upcoming obligations. Free cash flow, calculated as cash flow from operations minus capital expenditures, reached $522.0 million, though stock-based compensation represented 26.8% of operating cash flow.

Risk profile comparison

Airbnb faces significant competition from online travel agencies like Booking Holdings (NASDAQ:BKNG), as well as traditional hotel chains and search engines that use artificial intelligence to direct traffic. The company also navigates a complex regulatory landscape where local governments may impose strict limits or outright bans on short-term rentals. Additionally, the business remains sensitive to macroeconomic downturns and global health crises that can suddenly reduce travel demand and booking volumes.

Coupang is subject to intense regulatory scrutiny in South Korea, including investigations into its search ranking algorithms and data privacy practices. The company is currently contesting significant fines and recently experienced a major data breach in November 2025 that affected millions of accounts. Furthermore, its heavy concentration in the Korean market exposes it to regional economic volatility and potential geopolitical tensions, while competition from global players like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) remains a constant threat.

Valuation comparison

Airbnb trades at a higher premium relative to its sales but maintains stronger profitability, whereas Coupang offers a lower sales multiple with tighter bottom-line results.

The Forward P/E ratio compares the current stock price to future earnings estimates, while the P/S ratio measures a company's market value against its sales over the past twelve months.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

I would buy Airbnb. Coupang's stock valuation is substantially lower on the basis of the P/S ratio, and its stock trades near a 52-week low, but that's because the company is facing headwinds. Coupang's data incident last year put a stain on its reputation, and the South Korean government fined the e-commerce giant over $400 million, which is the largest data breach penalty in the country's history.

As a result, Coupang's sales growth is in free-fall. In the third quarter of 2025, before the data breach was revealed, revenue rose 18% year over year. That dropped to 11% in Q4 after the incident was publicized. In Q1 of 2026, year-over-year sales growth slowed to 8%, then dropped to 4% in Q2. This consistent quarterly sales decline suggests Coupang is struggling to regain its footing with customers.

Meanwhile, Airbnb has maintained consistent year-over-year sales growth, and in Q2 of this year, revenue rose 17% year over year to $3.6 billion. The lodging provider expanded its Airbnb Services business to include grocery delivery, car rentals, airport pickups, and luggage storage, which are all key traveler pain points. It also added boutique and independent hotels to its platform, indicating it continues to grow its offerings.
