US September PPI Preview: Will Inflation Surprise Again? US Stocks, Dollar and Gold Face Key Test

TradingKey - On October 15, US Eastern Time, the U.S. is set to release the September Producer Price Index (PPI). The September CPI released this Wednesday was notably higher than market expectations, and the PPI will further confirm whether upstream price pressures are heating up. This will directly affect market expectations for the Federal Reserve's October and December rate decisions.
September PPI May Heat Up Further, Testing Fed Rate-Hike Expectations
From the perspective of market expectations, consensus currently projects headline PPI to rise 0.6% month-on-month in September, significantly higher than August's 0.4%, while core PPI is expected to gain 0.3% month-on-month. If the released data meets expectations, it would indicate that price pressures on the US production side continue to build. Bill Adams, chief US economist at Fifth Third Commercial Bank, noted that a strong PPI reading could further increase the likelihood of the Federal Reserve raising interest rates in October.
Looking at the August data, headline PPI rose 0.4% month-on-month and 5.4% year-on-year. Among components, goods prices surged 1.1% month-on-month, energy prices climbed 4.2%, and diesel prices jumped 24.1% in a single month. Core PPI, excluding food, energy, and trade services, increased 0.3% month-on-month and 4.7% year-on-year, showing that price pressures were not driven entirely by energy.
Heading into September, energy costs remain likely to serve as a major driver of PPI. Prices for crude oil, gasoline, and diesel have recently stayed elevated. Because transportation, logistics, and manufacturing are particularly sensitive to energy costs, the production side typically experiences a more direct impact than consumer prices. If September's headline PPI reaches 0.6% month-on-month, it would suggest that rising energy costs are continuing to pass through to businesses.
More importantly, the September CPI released on Wednesday had already delivered a stronger-than-expected signal. US CPI rose 0.6% month-on-month and 3.7% year-on-year in September, while core CPI gained 0.3% month-on-month and 2.6% year-on-year, both showing that inflationary pressures remain sticky. Following the data release, expectations for further Fed rate hikes temporarily gathered steam, placing US equities under pressure as the US dollar and Treasury yields climbed.
Therefore, the significance of this PPI release to the market has increased noticeably. If headline PPI reaches or exceeds 0.6% alongside core PPI topping 0.3%, it will indicate that inflationary pressures are spreading from energy to a broader array of goods and services, reinforcing the rationale for the Fed to maintain high interest rates or even hike again.
How Does PPI Impact US Stocks, the Dollar and Gold?
For US equities, if September PPI comes in higher than expected, particularly if core PPI exceeds 0.3%, the market may further raise expectations for Fed rate hikes, and US Treasury yields could move higher again, weighing on high-valuation sectors such as the Nasdaq, AI, and semiconductors. The stronger-than-expected CPI in the previous trading session had already put tech stocks under notable pressure, with the Nasdaq posting its largest single-day drop in about three months, highlighting US stocks' current sensitivity to interest rate shifts. If PPI comes in below expectations, it will help ease rate pressures, and a pullback in US Treasury yields could drive a recovery in growth stocks.
For the US dollar, if both headline and core PPI top expectations again, the market will be more inclined to believe that US inflation is persistent, thereby raising the likelihood that the Fed will keep interest rates high or even continue hiking, which could re-strengthen the US Dollar Index. However, Fed officials currently still lean toward acting cautiously, so whether the dollar can sustain its rally remains to be seen based on whether PPI significantly exceeds expectations.

Gold Price Daily Chart, Source: TradingView
For gold (XAUUSD), if PPI comes in higher than expected, rising Fed rate hike expectations could drive up the US dollar and US Treasury yields, putting pressure on gold and forcing prices to retest support near $4,066; if the data comes in below expectations and rate hike expectations cool, it will favor a price rebound, with potential to test resistance near $4,230 on the upside. Spot gold has currently rebounded to around $4,140 after its previous pullback, with the market awaiting PPI to further confirm the direction of US inflation.
