The maximum Social Security benefit at age 67 -- the full retirement age (FRA) for most workers today -- is $4,152 per month in 2026, though expect that number to rise slightly in 2027. Beneficiaries who qualify for these checks take home nearly $50,000 in annual benefits, but few manage to do so.

You only need to check three boxes to earn the maximum benefit at 67. But it's a lot easier said than done. Even if you don't reach the largest checks, you can still leverage the factors discussed below to increase your monthly benefits.

Work at least 35 years before applying for Social Security

The Social Security Administration bases your benefit on your average monthly income over your 35 highest-earning years. When you have a shorter work history, it adds zero-income years to the calculation. Even one of these can significantly reduce your monthly checks.

There's no downside to working beyond 35 years before applying for Social Security. Many people earn more as their careers progress, which could boost their benefits. Their later, higher-earning years eventually push their earlier, lower-earning years out of their benefit calculation, resulting in larger checks.

Earn the maximum taxable earnings in all 35 years

You must pay the maximum amount of Social Security taxes during your 35 highest-earning years if you hope to take home the largest possible checks. In 2026, that means earning at least $184,500. This limit was lower in past years.

Most people never earn this much, and that's why it's so rare to take home the $4,152 maximum Social Security checks at your FRA. But even if you don't get there, anything you do to increase your income today will lead to larger benefits down the road.

Delay your Social Security application until 67

You become eligible for Social Security benefits as soon as you turn 62, but claiming that early can permanently reduce your benefit by up to 30%. You'd also cap your maximum benefit at $2,969 in 2026, and you'd only get that if you complete the two steps above.

Waiting until age 67 to apply helps you avoid this early claiming penalty, but it's not the right move for everyone. Those with short life expectancies and those without adequate personal savings may prefer to apply for Social Security earlier, even if it means settling for a smaller lifetime benefit.
