As the gig economy matures, many investors wonder which platform offers the most sustainable long-term value. Choosing between Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER) and DoorDash (NASDAQ:DASH) requires a look at their distinct strategies.

Uber dominates global mobility and freight, while DoorDash has solidified its lead in North American food and grocery delivery. Both companies successfully pivoted toward profitability in recent years. This comparison explores their financial strength, growth potential, and current market valuations to help you decide which stock belongs in your 2026 portfolio.

The case for Uber Technologies

Uber operates a massive technology platform spanning mobility, delivery, and freight services. In its latest annual report, filed for 2025, the company highlighted its presence in more than 15,000 cities. It connects over 200 million monthly active consumers with drivers and merchants. Key strategic moves include expanding freight logistics and partnering with autonomous vehicle leaders like Waymo to future-proof its network.

Financial performance has seen significant scaling lately. In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $52.0 billion, marking growth of approximately 18.3% compared to the previous year. The company reported net income of close to $10.1 billion. The net margin for the period was roughly 19.3%. This result shows how the company leverages its scale to improve profitability even as it continues to invest in global tech stocks.

The balance sheet remains stable. As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was roughly 0.4x. This metric compares total debt to shareholder equity, suggesting a manageable debt load. The current ratio is approximately 1.1x, meaning the company has enough short-term assets to cover its immediate liabilities. Free cash flow for FY 2025 reached close to $9.8 billion, providing plenty of cash for future operations.

The case for DoorDash

DoorDash functions as a local commerce platform, primarily facilitating on-demand delivery for restaurants, grocery stores, and convenience shops. According to its most recent annual report, the company has expanded its reach into university campus dining through its acquisition of Grubhub's Campus Dining business. It serves as a vital bridge between over 600,000 merchants and millions of consumers across 30 countries. By focusing on local merchants and neighborhood logistics, the company aims to become the go-to infrastructure for all local commerce needs.

Growth remains a central theme for the business. In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $13.7 billion, which represents growth of approximately 27.9% year over year. The company achieved net income of roughly $935.0 million during this period, showing a clear path toward sustained profitability. The net margin for the fiscal year was close to 6.8%. This growth is driven by increasing adoption of its DashPass subscription service and expansion into non-restaurant categories like retail and beauty products.

From a liquidity standpoint, the company maintains a healthy position. As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is approximately 0.3x. The current ratio, which measures the ability to pay short-term debts with current assets, is nearly 1.4x. Free cash flow for FY 2025 was close to $2.2 billion. Note that stock-based compensation represented roughly 43.2% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

Risk profile comparison

Uber faces significant regulatory risks regarding the classification of its drivers as independent contractors. Legal challenges in the U.S. and abroad could force a shift to an employee model, which would materially increase operating costs. The company also deals with intense competition from Lyft (NASDAQ:LYFT) and DoorDash. Additionally, safety incidents and potential litigation regarding sexual assault or wrongful death claims pose reputational risks and could lead to expensive settlements or regulatory fines.

DoorDash operates in a highly competitive landscape against rivals like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Uber. Maintaining market share often requires high spending on consumer incentives, which can pressure its net margin. The company also shares the risk of worker reclassification for its Dashers. Furthermore, DoorDash relies on third-party infrastructure for its operations. Challenges in integrating major acquisitions or potential cybersecurity breaches could disrupt its platform and harm its reputation among consumers and merchants.

Valuation comparison

Uber currently trades at more attractive valuation multiples compared to DoorDash, offering significantly lower ratios for both its future earnings estimates and annual sales.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

I'd go with Uber, and the case for it grows stronger with every passing quarter. Its combination of ridesharing, food delivery, and freight operating simultaneously across dozens of countries gives it a durability and breadth that DoorDash simply cannot match. Gross bookings have grown at a double-digit rate for three consecutive quarters and free cash flow is substantial. And with its autonomous-vehicle partnerships, it's well-positioned for wherever transportation is headed next.

DoorDash has its bright spots. It's reporting record membership sign-ups and growing monthly active users, and its acquisition of Deliveroo opens up a broader international runway. It's a credible long-term bet in the food delivery space, and for investors focused purely on delivery, it is a strong choice.

But DoorDash operates in a single category while Uber operates across three, each reinforcing the others. When one slows, the others can carry the load. Owning the more diversified platform in a maturing gig economy is the smarter long-term bet.
