Meta Connect 2026 Preview: Phoenix Headset and AI Glasses Take Center Stage, Can Meta Reshape the XR Ecosystem?

TradingKey - Meta Platforms (META)'s annual developer conference, Meta Connect 2026, will be held from September 23 to 24 in Menlo Park, California. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg will deliver the keynote address at 4:00 p.m. PT on September 23, with developer-focused events taking place the following day.

According to Meta's official agenda, this year's conference will focus on showcasing the latest advancements in AI technology, smart glasses, and VR. Following a year of business restructuring, the market expects Meta to further clarify the relationship among VR headsets, smart glasses, and personal AI agents, as well as demonstrate how these investments will form a complete consumer hardware and software ecosystem.

Ahead of the conference, Meta's stock price has received a significant boost. Driven by rising enthusiasm for its AI agent Muse and price-target upgrades from institutions, META rose approximately 11.4% on Monday to close at $741.25, marking its highest closing price since October 2025.

AI Glasses May Become the Biggest Highlight of Connect

If Meta spent the past few years trying to prove that VR headsets could become the next computing platform, its product roadmap this year has clearly tilted toward lighter wearable devices.

One of the most anticipated products is the rumored camera-free AI glasses, Luna. According to reports, the product may come in two different styles and enhance voice interaction by adding more microphones while eliminating the camera to make the frames lighter and thinner, which could also address to some extent the current privacy controversies surrounding camera-equipped glasses. Reports indicate that Luna is expected to launch around October, and Connect could serve as the window for its official debut.

Removing the camera does not mean Meta is abandoning AI features; instead, it may make the product positioning clearer. Users can still interact with Meta AI or Muse via voice, except the device will no longer rely on visual capture as its main input. For Meta, this design can lower the complexity of the glasses themselves while reducing consumer concerns about being filmed at any time.

Meanwhile, Meta may also continue to refine its Ray-Ban Meta and display-enabled smart glasses product lines. Meta has already opened relevant tools to developers, allowing them to build applications around the camera, audio, and display capabilities of AI glasses, indicating that the company is attempting to further transform smart glasses from a hardware product into an independent platform.

Phoenix May Debut, But Focus Isn't Traditional VR Games

Besides smart glasses, Project Phoenix may be another piece of hardware most worth watching at this year's Connect.

Recently, product images suspected to be Phoenix appeared in Meta's Horizon OS firmware, showing a device with a design noticeably lighter and thinner than traditional VR headsets, with an overall silhouette closer to large glasses or goggles. The images also show a connecting cable, which aligns closely with previous reports of the main headset unit connecting to an external computing module.

This design addresses a long-standing weight issue in the VR industry. Offloading components such as part of the computing power and the battery outside the headset reduces the load on the user's head while maintaining stronger processing performance. Related reports also indicate that Phoenix may adopt interaction methods such as eye and hand tracking, reducing reliance on traditional controllers. The official Connect developer agenda has already begun emphasizing controller-free interactions and new agentic development workflows, which echoes the product direction Phoenix may take.

However, Phoenix should not be directly characterized as a new Quest model going on sale this year. Public reports generally expect the device to get an official preview at this Connect, but its formal market launch is more likely to take place in 2027.

Muse Brings AI From Software to the Entire Wearable Ecosystem

Compared to hardware, another very noticeable change at this year's Meta Connect is that AI is becoming the core software layer connecting different devices.

Meta officially launched Muse on September 8, defining it as a personal AI agent. Unlike traditional chatbots that primarily answer questions, Muse's goal is to directly help users complete tasks, such as sending emails, planning travel, and handling other multi-step workflows. Meta stated that Muse is powered by the Muse Spark model and is currently rolling out gradually on iOS, Android, and muse.ai in the United States, with plans to extend support to AI glasses.

This could prove to be the most important product thread at this year's Connect.

In the past, smart glasses were largely about adding a camera, microphone, and speaker alongside smartphones. However, the addition of AI agents could turn glasses into a new gateway between users and digital services. Users won't necessarily need to pull out their phones and open apps; instead, they can give instructions directly to the glasses, letting Muse complete the remaining tasks.

From this perspective, what Meta is doing is not simply cramming AI into a pair of glasses, but rather attempting to make Muse a unified AI gateway connecting smartphones, glasses, VR devices, and Meta's other services.

This also explains why developers have become key participants at this year's Connect. Meta is currently providing developers with AI glasses development tools while continuing to update its Horizon platform to deliver more development capabilities for VR and AI-related applications.
